With just a few days remaining until the launch of Sonic Frontiers, Sega and Sonic Team released a new, action-packed trailer for the game. The new "Showdown Trailer" for Sonic Frontiers showed the Blue Blur himself taking on an army of colossal robots, running briskly through the environment, solving acrobatic puzzles, and finding out what's going on around him, as his friends remained in tow and his foes chased him down.
Developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, Sonic Frontiers will be the latest entry in a tumultuous string of 3D-focused Sonic games. The last of these was 2017's Sonic Forces, which received a mixed response from fans and critics. With the hope that the game will have more of the action seen in levels inspired by Sonic Adventure 2, and fewer infamous moments than that of 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog, fans await Sonic Frontiers with both hope and a sense of caution given past precedent.
The new trailer ran just shy of two minutes in length and showed Sonic himself in the thick of the action. The trailer was released five days ahead of the game's November 8 launch date. The trailer picked up the pace following the end of Sonic Frontiers Prologue, which aired on YouTube just two days prior. As the voice of a new character called Sage rang out in the trailer, the objectives of the game were called out. In the trailer, Sage implored Sonic to collect the Chaos Emeralds, tear down the walls between the dungeons, and destroy the Titans that plague the islands that Sonic and his friends find themselves on.
The trailer also showed Sonic helping Big the Cat reel in a new catch, as an octopus was shown at the end of Big's fishing line. In addition, the trailer featured one of the Cyber Space levels that make up about one-third of the game's action. The level shown in particular was Sky Sanctuary from Sonic and Knuckles. This was, however, not the first time in the series that Sky Sanctuary was made in 3D, as the first incarnation came from 2011's Sonic Generations.
With the game's main theme called "I'm Here" playing in the background, the trailer ended with Sonic using the power of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic to trade punches with a Titan as the games logo and box art for each platform was shown. In addition, "The Adventurer's Treasure Box" preorder bonus that can be redeemed in the game after launch was shown. In short, the new trailer condensed what to expect in Sonic Frontiers into a brief, bite-sized sample for fans to chew on ahead of the game's launch.
Sonic Frontiers launches on November 8 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
