The 2021 Game Awards brought plenty of exciting announcements for a plethora of new games, much like the annual awards show does every year. Alongside games like Deathloop and It Takes Two taking home several awards, the annual ceremony saw many major reveals for upcoming titles like the highly anticipated Elden Ring, A Plague Tale: Requiem and many more. Among the most prolific of the unveilings was the official announcement of a brand-new game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, Sonic Frontiers.

The announcement of Sonic Frontiers comes following a relative lull in the Sonic franchise over the past few years. Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't seen a major main-series game since the release of Sonic Forces in 2017 which was met with heavily mixed reception from fans and critics alike. While the trailer did not reveal much in the way of gameplay, what it did give fans of the franchise were sweeping shots of the game's setting confirming rumors that the next Sonic would be open world. Now, a rumor recently surfaced that may have leaked the release date for Sonic's next game.

A recent Tweet from PlayStation Game Size, a Twitter account following updates to the PlayStation database, reported that a release date had apparently been listed in Sony's databases for Sonic Frontiers. According to information given by a PlayStation QA Tester, the newest Sonic game is listed within the PlayStation database with a release date set for November 15th, 2022. The account is quick to note that the date may not be an accurate representation of when the game will release, implying that the November 2022 date may just be a placeholder.

If the November 15th release date is to be believed, it would place the release of Sonic Frontiers only a week after the five-year anniversary of the blue blur's last major game in Sonic Forces, with Forces releasing on November 7th, 2017. While other remasters have come out in the years since Forces released, like 2019's Team Sonic Racing and this year's Sonic Colors Ultimate, the Game Awards announcement excited long-time fans of the franchise with Sonic Frontiers' open world drawing comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Sonic Frontiers wasn't the only major announcement the Sonic franchise saw during the annual award show as Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey officially unveiled a brand new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The 2020 Sonic movie saw critical acclaim with particular praise given to Carrey's off-the-wall performance as iconic Sonic villain Dr. Robotnik. Between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Frontiers potentially releasing in November, fans of the Sega mascot have plenty to look forward to in 2022.

Sonic Frontiers is currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch.
