Sonic Frontiers is a game in the long running Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and perhaps the first open world game in the series. The player takes control of the titular Sonic the Hedgehog, roaming the worlds of the game at high speeds in a desperate attempt to find his friends again.

There are many players who are going to instantly take to the new spin on the Sonic franchise, including the more interesting open world mechanics. However, there are still going to be people who may not do as well, and as such they will need to know about some common mistakes.

7 Letting The Map Overwhelm

Sonic Frontiers - Running

Make no mistakes about it - the map in the world of Sonic Frontiers is huge. It is way bigger than what most Sonic the Hedgehog fans may be used to, due to the fact that most Sonic games are not open world - as such, the huge, sprawling world of the game may seem like it is too much to deal with.

Thankfully, though, despite the blue blur's gimmick being speed, there is no reason to rush through everything. The world of Sonic Frontiers is huge, and a player will have time to go through everything that is there for them in the game.

6 Forgetting To Fish For Items

Sonic Frontiers - Kick

One of the first things that a player who messes around for a little while will realize is that fishing is very beneficial to them. It may not seem like this is the case, but players have very much agreed on it.

Essentially, fishing will be able to reward players with the in game currency super quickly, which then allows them to buy all sorts of things (such as consumables, important keys, and so on). Not a lot of players will know how good fishing is initially, so that's why it's best to know quickly.

5 Not Learning How To Activate Ring Dash

Sonic Frontiers - World

While it can be difficult to activate it initially, the Ring Dash is going to be very important for a player to know. This is going to be their way of quickly collecting rings, and the game does not tell a player how to do this.

Essentially, Sonic will start to run at top speeds when nearby rings, thus ensuring that they are able to collect rings as quickly as possible. This will speed up missions where a player will have to collect a certain amount of rings.

4 Forgetting To Prioritize Memory Tokens

Memory Tokens are also something that a player should remember to collect as many as they can, because they are important for a player in regards to finding their friends. Collecting these friends are going to be the player's main goal, after all.

It is worth noting that it's not like Memory Tokens are universal - a player will not be able to, say, take the Memory Token for Knuckles and use it to rescue Tails. As such, there will be a lot of tokens for a player to collect on their journey.

3 Not Tweaking The Controls On Sonic

Sonic Frontiers - Rings

Surprisingly, a player can tweak how Sonic plays in the game Sonic Frontiers. Since this is not something that most - if any - of the other previous Sonic games have had in store, there are many players who may not realize that they can do this.

It is important for a player to mess around with how Sonic is controlled in Sonic Frontiers, in order to get it perfect to their play style. A player can choose how fast he accelerates, how sensitive steering is, and more, so players can fine tune it to perfection.

2 Not Unlocking The Entire Map

Sonic Frontiers - Signs

Seeing as the map in Sonic Frontiers is much bigger than most players realize, it is very easy for them to fall into the trap of not knowing how much more of the map is available to be unlocked. Even if a player does not want to 100% complete the game, it is still worth it to unlock the whole map.

This will rid the player of the pesky 'fog of war' effect that shows on the map. This effect, essentially, hides large chunks of the map from the player, making it difficult for them to know where to go.

1 Rushing In Without Studying Enemies

Sonic Frontiers - Ship

Surprisingly, despite the whole point of Sonic is to go as fast as possible, it is worth noting that a player is going to struggle big time against enemies if they rush in without studying their mechanics. Every boss - especially stronger ones - will have a different way to fight.

A player should remember to hang back at first and watch how their enemies move, especially if they are going up against a boss. This will show them when the boss attacks and when they are also going to be open for hits.

Sonic Frontiers is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Microsoft Windows.
