'Sonic Anniversary' Confirmed; Celebrates 20 Years of Spinning Hedgehogs

Sonic Anniversary Game Confirmed for Sonic's 20th Anniversary

It looks like Sonic is going to have a new game coming our way to help celebrate his 20th anniversary with a game -- fittingly titled -- Sonic Anniversary. But with Sonic 4: Episode 1 just dropping this week, Sonic Colors and Sonic Free Riders hot on its heels, and Sega recently saying they were going to pull some "average" Sonic games from shelves, you might not be alone in thinking news of another Sonic game at this point might seem a little odd.

But then again, the Blue Blur has seen his share of hits, commercial and critical, and Sega wanting to show him some love on his 20th anniversary makes some sense.

That's where Sonic Anniversary will come in, with the game's confirmation coming from a Spanish Sega representative speaking at Madrid’s Gamefest 2010 expo. And while Sonic 4 may feature retooled or re-imagined levels from Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Anniversary is going to take the idea a little further, serving as a compilation of the best classic levels, from Sonic the Hedgehog to Sonic Adventure 2, all updated for current-generation consoles - meaning gamers will likely see a mix of 2D and 3D environments.

I have some fond memories of Sonic back in the day. I got each and every Sonic game for the Genesis on release and played the crap out of them. I even remember enjoying the first Sonic Adventure when I first played it. I also think Sonic 4: Episode 1 delivered in a lot of ways - and have high hopes for Sonic Colors to do the same. So yeah, I am a little interested in seeing a Sonic Anniversary game. If a developer is really able to take all the best levels and Sonic experiences over the past 20 years and somehow compile them into one game - it sounds like a lot of fun. In fact, Sonic Anniversary could serve as my go-to game for my Sonic fix, instead of just playing a few levels here and there from the many Sonic compilations I already have.

Sonic Creator No Intention to Work with Sega

I am, however, a little curious to see how this game will do compared to Sonic 4 or Sonic Colors, especially if we are still receiving new episodes of Sonic 4 when Sonic Anniversary hits shelves. Would Sonic Anniversary prevent people from dropping the digital coin on Sonic 4? I don't know. What do you Ranters think? Are you excited about a "best of" Sonic game? Do you wonder what they can take from Sonic Adventures 2 that could count as "best of"? Or are you getting your Sonic fix from Sonic 4 or Sonic Colors? Let us know in the comments.

Sonic Anniversary will spin towards gamers sometime in 2011 to help celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary. The game is currently set to be released on the Wii, DS, PSP, and PS3.
