As the Sonic the Hedgehog series celebrated its 30th-anniversary last year, many fans gathered together to pay tribute to the series and create some amazing art to showcase their love for the franchise in their own way. As the dedication to Sonic and his friends poured in, a game that was released on the hedgehog's 10th anniversary was turning 20 years old in 2021. That game was Sonic Adventure 2, one of the most beloved Sonic titles of all time. In regard to that game in specific, an animator known as Acruxicon had been working on a special tribute for the game in advance. With the help of over 40 fans, Acruxicon pushed through several hurdles to organize what would become the Sonic Adventure 2: Reimagined Music Video project. While the video was released in January 2022, the project took three years to be finalized and released, with Acruxion saying that the process was difficult due to a lack of support at the start. Despite the struggles, the final project serves as a testament to what fans love about SA2 to the finest detail, and the results are stunning.RELATED: Sonic Fan Creates Incredible Stop-Motion Video from LEGO Set

The Sonic Adventure 2: Reimagined Project

The Sonic Adventure 2: Reimagined music video puts a focus on the game's story as all the animators on the project took specific parts of the main vocal song of SA2, "Live and Learn" by Crush 40, to draw something for. The fan-animated music video set to one of Jun Senoue's most famous vocal compositions sees every part of the game re-animated in at least one shot, all the way to the final battle with the Biolizard in Final Hazard. As impressive as that was on its own, each cut is also timed to the specific part of the song the animators were assigned, which gives it some impressive detail.

Other projects similar to Sonic Adventure 2: Reimagined tend to only bring on animators for what it seeks to accomplish. However, in order to include more fans that couldn't animate, Acruxion turned to illustrators, background artists, fan voice actors, and even musicians for help with other parts of the project, including a surprise ending sequence for fans to see as the music video premiered on YouTube.

The Teamwork of Sonic Fans

While many animators of projects like these normally simply do their parts and move on, Acruxion also took on the role of director, in order to make sure everything melded together perfectly. The results can be seen immediately as all the separate cuts of animation segue into one another seamlessly, keeping track of where one part starts and another one ends. Two of the many animators who did this rather well are Chimera and St1nkling, who put a focus on Metal Harbor and worked together to create both an impressive and also funny glimpse at a fan-favorite Sega level.

The video as a whole is eleven minutes long including the music video tribute and animator credits, but also an extra segment featuring fan musicians and voice actors re-creating the emotionally somber ending credits scene of Sonic Adventure 2 itself. The project as a whole does a great job of showcasing everything fans love about SA2, down to the emotional weight and depth the story holds, as well as more humorous parts such as the scene featuring Sonic and Knuckles bickering in the space shuttle on the way to the Ark. Even Chao managed to get included despite the focus on the game's story.

It's clear the passion for the game hasn't died down in the 20 years it has been around, and with the new perspective on some of Adventure 2's most famous scenes, it incidentally makes a point that remaking a game as fondly remembered as this may be something Sega might want to look into. With the dedication and detail behind the fan-made music video, and how it's adored by many other fans, it makes a clear point that an SA2 remake that emphasizes everything many players loved about SA2 would be an incredibly successful venture for Sega if the company chose to invest in it.

Sega also tends to understand when games deserve another chance when it comes to its history of re-releases. With the re-release of Sonic Lost World on PC, and the recent launch of Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Sega ended up giving plenty of fans a chance to experience games that were once limited to only one console. Sonic Adventure 2's case isn't so limited, as the game saw an HD re-release onto PS3, Xbox 360, and PC back in 2012. However, outside of backward compatibility, the classic game can't be found on current consoles. In the wake of the rumors of a scrapped Sonic Adventure remake from a few years back, there may be a chance that Sega may want to give this another try with enough fan demand.

Sonic Adventure 2 is available now on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
