Sonic the Hedgehog is a hot topic right now. The new movie is setting records for video game adaptations and speculation regarding the sequel is already heating up. It's just disappointing that there isn't a new Sonic video game out to capitalize on the hype. That may be changing soon, however, according to a new rumor, as a source claims that a Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Collection for 3D Sonic games is going to be announced at SXSW 2020.

The rumor comes from 4chan, which deserves to be called one of the least reliable sources for video game rumors online. That said, the rumor does have some credence due to an attached image. The text of the new Sonic game's rumor's post says, "Sega's preparing for a big Sonic reveal at SXSW that will bring most of the 3D mainline Sonic games to current and next-gen consoles."

It's the image that's particularly interesting, however. The image shows three different 3D-rendered characters. Two of them are Sonic the Hedgehog and the third is Tails. Both are rendered in a similar 3D style of graphics but look unique to their own. There's also some Japanese text at the top of the image that looks like a cut off portion of a Sonic: 30th Anniversary Collection.

It bears repeating that there's no official evidence that a Sonic: 30th Anniversary Edition exists. That the news comes from 4chan makes the rumor highly suspect. It's entirely possible that the image was faked and the entire thing is a hoax.

That said, a collection of classic Sonic games does sound like something that would go over well with fans. Sonic's 30th anniversary is accurately coming up as well, though it would be in 2021 and not 2020. Finally, it makes a ton of sense for Sega to announce a Sonic game as soon as possible to capitalize on the movie's success.

Fans are already speculating about what could be included in a Sonic: 30th Anniversary Edition that focused on 3D Sonic games. Sonic Adventure and its sequel, as well as Sonic Colors and Sonic Unleashed, are by far the most often mentioned inclusions. Other possibilities include Sonic Heroes and the self-titled Sonic the Hedgehog game from 2006. Perhaps the rumor was incomplete though and some classic or new 2D games would be included, too.

Sonic: 30th Anniversary Collection is unconfirmed and no platforms are rumored as of yet.
