Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog don't have to wait any longer for information about the sequel's plot. A document that includes the plot of the upcoming Sonic movie has been submitted to the United States Copyright Office, making what happens in the next film known to gamers, film enthusiasts, and anyone who might be interested.
The previous Sonic the Hedgehog film is currently touted as one of history's best video game movies. The film grossed a total of around $148 Million at the domestic box office and was labeled one of 2020's most notable major film releases (due in part to a dry spell of film releases caused by the COVID-19 pandemic). Sonic the Hedgehog is also credited for playing a part in the revitalization of Jim Carrey's acting career, as he played Dr. Robotnik to warm reception.
The leaked plot of the sequel contains story beats that longtime Sonic fans are undoubtedly familiar with. It states that after Tom and Maddie (James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, respectively) leave Green Hills for vacation, Sonic is confronted by Dr. Robotnik, and this time, the villain is partnered with Knuckles the Echidna, who seeks to find a powerful emerald. Sonic then teams up with Tails to find the emerald before it falls into the hands of Dr. Robotnik.
This announcement accompanies the high amount of buzz that Sonic the Hedgehog's sequel has received since its initial confirmation by Paramount Pictures. The plot leak also follows rumors that Jason Momoa was offered the role of Knuckles, as well as the news that the sequel has already finished filming. Furthermore, fans can also look forward to Ben Schwartz's return to the role of Sonic, as well as Jeff Fowler's return to the director's chair.
