The final trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has made its way online, and fans worldwide are buzzing about it. Not only does the final trailer bring the humor, action, and personal drama together to the forefront, it also reveals an unforeseen twist for Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his already-twisted designs for world domination.

For those unfamiliar with the gaming and comic lore behind Robotnik and his evil plans against Sonic and the world at large, he often utilizes the mystical energies of the Chaos Emeralds or other fantastically-powered items to soup up his machines and lackeys, or worse, uses said items to release supernatural beings of immense power and attempts to bring them under his thrall. The latter of those two plans often backfires, leaving Sonic and company to clean up Robotnik's mess and restore the balance of the world before it all falls apart.

In the case of the final Sonic 2 trailer, fans witness a true first for the Sonic franchise's diabolical super-genius: He channels the energies of the Master Emerald into himself. He floats out of the "Mean Bean" coffee shop in an unassuming black coat with green ley-lines built in, with the same sickly green glow in his eyes as the Master Emerald, and starts warping the surrounding environment, tearing apart machinery and creating tornados with little more than a flick of the wrist. That, along with the titanic "Death Egg Robot" and swarms of new robotic minions, is a stark reminder for viewers and fans alike that while Knuckles (Idris Elba) may be front and center as Sonic's rival in the sequel, Robotnik remains as an omnipresent threat to Sonic, his friends, and the world itself.

The Sonic 2 trailer also brings to mind humanity's stake in Sonic's pursuit of his own brand of justice, as fans see Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) become literal "wedding crashers" in their attempts to escape Robotnik's forces. Furthermore, Sonic's new hometown Green Hills becomes the epicenter for Robotnik's empowered return, with its citizens all but helpless to watch as he tears everything apart. It brings viewers back around to the words of wisdom that Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) tries to impart on Sonic in the first trailer, that he has noble intentions in his heroic pursuits, but can't simply go looking for trouble and must be ready to take a stand when the world will need him the most.

It can't be stated enough how well the final Sonic 2 trailer brings everything together as it should, from Robotnik's resounding return to Sonic and Knuckles' intense face-offs, to the grit and emotional gravitas put on display by Sonic's friends and family in support of his being a hero when the world comes calling. The sequel has hit its stride with every tease, reveal, clip, and trailer release, and now the movie itself is all that remains on the finishing stretch, as fan anticipation for Sonic 2 is at an all-time high coming off the shocking success of the first film.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to blaze into theaters on April 8, 2022.
