The Professor Layton series is known for its head-scratching puzzles and Scooby Doo-style mystery. It’s a game that carries with it an elegant execution relying heavily on the power of one’s brain. With Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, gamers are once again tasked with solving a great mystery littered with a ton of riddles and puzzles along the way.
Here’s a brief synopsis of the game:
Professor Layton and his apprentice, Luke, receive a confounding letter — from Luke 10 years in the future. But the message inside is even more troubling: London of the future is in disarray, and the only person who can help set things right is Professor Layton.
Not only does the game come with some 165+ puzzles but it also improves upon previous games with more hand-drawn animated sequences to replace many of the text-based cut scenes.
As any Professor Layton player knows, the three hint buttons are your friend. These usually come in the form of a vague indication of where you should be going with the puzzle, followed by a more direct idea, and then a specific step you should be performing to complete the puzzle. Unwound Future takes it a step further by adding a Super Hint, but no word on whether it will require a new set of hint coins, cost more, or in what way this hint will assist you.
Professor Layton is that game that you can fire up on your DS for an hour or so and have a varied experience the whole way through. Developer Level 5 should take pride in knowing that the particular mysteries it crafts are constantly keeping players guessing till the very end. If you haven’t played a Professor Layton game before, any of the two previous US-released versions are perfect jumping off points. But since Unwound Future is right around the corner I suggest you start there and, if you enjoy it, move backwards.
Similar to the previous version of the game, expect more puzzles and riddles to be added to the game via downloadable content. However, be sure to scoop them up soon because they only become available for a limited time.
Any Ranters looking forward to the release of Unwound Future? If you have played any of the Professor Layton Games before, what are your thoughts?
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future makes mush out of your brain on September 12, 2010 for the Nintendo DS.
