Over the past weekend, EVO 2019 saw a number of new fighting game champions crowned, new fighting game announcements, and a lot of ups and downs. One of the biggest disappointments would be, arguably, the "reveal" that Solid Snake was joining the Tekken 7 roster, and even though EVO has apologized for the joke, it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouth, including Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter.
For the uninitiated, a video revealing that Solid Snake was coming to Tekken 7 "leaked" during the EVO event, leaving many to expect an official announcement would occur after the technical difficulties were fixed, but when producer Katsuhiro Harada took the stage, no such announcement was made. He made a joke about Street Fighter 5 leaks, revealed new DLC characters Zafina and Leroy, and then exited.
Hours passed in confusion before EVO took to social media to clarify the situation. The event went on to reveal that it was their idea of a "joke," however poorly received, and that it had been done without the consent or knowledge of Bandai Namco, Tekken 7's publisher. This apology caught the attention of David Hayter who wanted to point out a few others who were left out of the loop.
Hayter points out that EVO forgot to consult him or Konami about the Solid Snake DLC for Tekken 7 joke. Considering that the Metal Gear franchise and Solid Snake are Konami's IP and that Hayter has voiced Snake for the better part of two decades (with an exception or two), it certainly would have been a respectful move. The phrasing of Hayter's response is also quite telling.
EVO,— David Hayter (@DavidBHayter) August 5, 2019
You also failed to consult me, or Konami. Please do not use my voice to promote other games. Ever.
As seen above, he ends his response by telling EVO to never use his voice to promote other games "ever." As unfortunate as it is that Tekken 7 is not getting Solid Snake, it seems equally, if not more so, unfortunate that EVO has gained the ire of David Hayter, as he is one of the most iconic voices in gaming to date.
Tekken 7 is out now for Arcade, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
