The newest trailer for Solar Ash premiered at Summer Game Fest 2021, showing the protagonist, Rei, taking down another of the game's giant beasts. This is the second game from Hyper Light Drift developer Heart Machine and it has a very similar appearance and style. While the trailer failed to provide a solid release date, it did manage to show off more of the game's flashy and fluid traversal mechanics.

The world's first look at Solar Ash came as part of the PlayStation 5 event last year, where the next-gen console was first unveiled. It was short and sweet, and worked well as a general introduction to the title but didn't do much in showing how the game will play. In February the following year, the game got more time to shine during a Sony State of Play, where new Solar Ash PS5 gameplay footage was featured. The latest trailer focuses more on traversal mechanics and shows the colorful, otherworldly Rei walking, climbing, and skating around equally colorful environments.

As the trailer demonstrates, players will have a basic attack that can be used while moving. They will also have a grappling device, which is used at one point to latch onto the back of a giant, flying creature called a Sentinal. Rei will need to take down a number of them along her journey as a Voidrunner. Once she manages to get on their backs, she will have to navigate around and attack nodes to finish them off. The whole process channels a lot of Shadow of the Colossus vibes, but evidently more action-packed.

More information on these giant beasts, as well as the game's story, will likely be revealed when the indie title is closer to launch. When that will be is not quite clear just yet, as the game still has a vague, 2021 release date. When it does release, it will be a PlayStation console exclusive, but it will also be available on the Epic Games Store.

What audiences have seen of the title so far is impressive, and there are high hopes it will match the success of Hyper Light Drifter, one of gaming's most critically-acclaimed pixel art titles. With Solar Ash, Heart Machine is taking advantage of the PlayStation consoles' abilities and making the retro 80s color palate really pop with a more cell-shaded approach. The gameplay looks to be just as engaging and deep as its predecessor, though. Once it finally releases, it could make end up ranking as one of the best indie RPGs available.

Solar Ash will release for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in 2021.
