The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has made things difficult for all kinds of jobs that typically require workers to be in close contact with other people. TV and film production has paused as everyone figures out the best way to keep actors and production staff safe and healthy.

The Bold and the Beautiful has been working hard to keep its 33 year production streak going, even through the pandemic. Filming intimate scenes has been particularly challenging, requiring a number of clever workarounds in order to keep their actors and production crew safe at all times.

As a result, the producers and cast have been forced to get creative in order to keep their steamy scenes that drive soap opera plots. As Executive Producer Bradley Bell explained, “At first, we took out the love scenes, and the show was falling a little flat because we’re all about romance and family interactions. One of the first ideas we had was to bring in mannequins for the intimate scenes and hospital scenes, and it’s working quite well." So the crew dragged out one of their old mannequins, most famous for starring in a 15 year old graveyard scene, and got to work at getting them in the mood.

This isn't the only solution of course; the producers have also been forced to rework how they film kiss scenes, and even close embraces. For the most part, this has been solved by inviting the actor's own spouses on to set, filming the scene as normal up until the close encounter, and quickly swapping in a more familiar partner, cutting to a carefully angled shot that makes it seem as if nothing has changed at all.

The Bold and The Beautiful isn't the only production that has faced difficulties in the age of coronavirus, but it is one the few that have managed to get started up again despite the social distancing requirements, even as movies and theaters in particular struggle. Despite never having stopped production before, the show was able to halt for a small while, using completed episodes until they figured out the best way to keep filming.

While the crew are committed to their work, the cost and labor of safe production will slow their pace considerable, and it is unclear whether or not they can maintain their pre-lockdown episode schedule. At the very least, however, fans of The Bold and the Beautiful can still look forward to new episodes of their favorite soap opera, even if the new actors seem a little bit stiff.

New episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful air weekdays at 1:30pm on CBS
