Back in the late 90s, crossover fighting games were everywhere. Capcom in particular was willing to put its roster of fighters up against all challengers. Marvel vs. Capcom might be the most famous series, with a number of standout titles that hold up to this day. However, rival fighting game developer SNK also put its stable of fighters up against Capcom in a number of games, including SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millenniumnow rumored to be coming to Switch.

Since that golden era of crossovers, similar games have had diminishing returns. Street Fighter X Tekken was plagued by a controversy around on-disc DLC locking characters behind a paywall. The latest Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite did not get a featured slot at EVO, which seems like it should have been a given considering the franchise's history. While some of the newer crossover titles are not delivering what fans are looking for, revisiting a classic could be something for fans to do on the Nintendo Switch if rumors are to be believed.

Despite being on a handheld, the Neo Geo Pocket Color title SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium has sprite work that looks great, and the fighting mechanics are smooth. Rumors are circulating that the game is coming to Nintendo Switch after the South Korean ratings board issued a rating for the game, which is a solid indication the game is heading for release. SNK has been slowly bringing its catalog over to the Switch, with Fatal Fury: First Contact arriving in December.

There is also speculation that this release, Match of the Millennium, could signal a renewed cooperation agreement between SNK and Capcom, as the game was developed by SNK but features Capcom IP. To have a game re-released would indicate SNK received the go ahead from Capcom. The licensing difficulties that arise when companies work on a project together make it hard for a remake or re-release to happen, such is the case with Super Mario RPG, which is trapped between Nintendo and Square Enix despite fans wanting to see the game come back.

While the golden era of crossovers may be over, getting the chance to relive some of those classics on Nintendo Switch could be a possibility in the future. The Capcom vs. fighting games have delivered some gems over the years, and the pint-sized Match of the Millennium offers a lot in that small package.
