Rebellion Developments made a name for itself with the release of 1994’s Alien vs. Predator, an ambitious FPS title that would go on to be one of the most acclaimed on the Atari Jaguar. However, the studio would receive wider recognition following 2005’s Sniper Elite, a World War 2 shooter that stood in direct contrast to contemporary hits like Call of Duty and Medal of Honor due to its emphasis on slower-paced precision as opposed to run-and-gun action. The series is still going strong today, and a new list of achievements for Sniper Elite 5 suggests that it will be following the framework established in the series’ fourth mainline installment.

The first thing fans will notice when checking out the achievement list is how unbalanced it is. While it’s not exactly out of the ordinary, of the fifty-four total trophies available, one will be platinum, two will be gold, two more will be silver, and the other forty-nine will be bronze. This categorization, of course, only pertains to PlayStation players, though achievement hunting remains a major part of the Sniper Elite series regardless of platform. Fans who went for every trophy in Sniper Elite 4 likely remember the notorious liver shot challenge, and there’s every reason to believe the forthcoming sequel will be every bit as demanding for completionists.

Plenty of achievements reference specific events in the game’s campaign, so those hoping to go in as spoiler-free as possible may want to avoid it. Broadly speaking, however, this new installment will see the return of marksman Karl Fairburne who will now be heading to France in order to track down a secret Third Reich experiment known as “Project Kraken.” The Sniper Elite games aren’t typically renowned for their narratives, though Sniper Elite 5 will be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one, so fans of more story-driven titles can check it out virtually risk-free when it launches in late May.

The achievements list also hints at the new invasion mechanic partially borrowed from the Dark Souls games, which will allow enemy players to join a player’s campaign mission as an opposing marksman. Something of this sort was also seen in 2020’s Deathloop, though Sniper Elite’s higher skill-cap gameplay could add some major depth to the mechanic.

Other trophies suggest that players will need to use all sorts of different weapons and equipment to dispatch enemies both in the campaign and online, and there are quite a few references to an antagonist named Möller. Achievement hunters can expect to trigger quite a few iconic Sniper Elite x-ray kill cams of this person’s assassination before earning the platinum trophy.

Sniper Elite 5 will be available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on May 26, 2022.
