Few creatures have captured people's imagination quite like Cthulhu, a cosmic entity and cult icon from H.P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu in 1928 that drives those in its presence to madness. Cthulhu's popularity has landed it at the head of various video and tabletop games, such as Fate of Cthulhu, but now the Old God has taken its place in the playable pantheon of Hi-Rez Studios and Titan Forge Games' free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) SMITE.

The Lovecraftian horror is the 110th playable character in the game and its "most anticipated God ever," according to a press release from Hi-Rez Studios. Known as "the Great Dreamer" in SMITE, Cthulhu was first revealed with a cinematic trailer in May and has a gameplay style that "revolves around aggression" with attacks that invoke insanity and allow him to feed off of it until opponents' minds "shatter," granting Cthulhu permanent benefits.

Cthulhu will also stand out in SMITE by literally being larger than most other characters, and whenever he approaches them there will be additional visual and sound effects as well as a "corrupting" presence on their interface. Alongside him comes changes to the Arena's map "for the foreseeable future," a summer sale on in-game items, and five new character skins.

This new character, much like the recent addition of Silent Hill's Pyramid Head into Dead by Daylight, is just one example of SMITE's ever-growing popularity. Last year, Hi-Rez Studios expanded into the United Kingdom by creating a new studio called Red Beard Games.

SMITE is free to play for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
