Cthulhu brings his eldritch energies to the world of Smite. And with Cthulhu's arrival comes mythology fans who likely want to try subjecting their opponents to unspeakable horrors. However, before players try playing Cthulhu, perhaps they might want to consider trying other Gods in the divine brawler. After all, why settle with Cthulhu when they can use Zeus and his thunderbolt, or even Heimdallr and his sword?
The god versus god MOBA has a roster of 108 Gods, each bringing their unique qualities and abilities. Moreover, these Gods bring rich stories from their respective mythologies. Players, both new and veteran to Smite's fast-paced combat system, will likely want to know which of these Gods should be in their favorites' list.
10 Use This God: Ao Kuang
Ao Kuang, the Dragon King of the Eastern Seas, easily made a mark to players as one of the best Junglers in the MOBA. Ao Kuang, if working in tandem with other Crowd Control characters, can finish clashes quickly.
His S2 Dragon Call summons dragons that add damage to basic attacks. Moreover, his Ultimate King of the Eastern Seas or S3 Wild Storm can help him chase enemies trying to escape. Aside from the Jungle, these abilities make Ao Kuang perfect for Jungling.
Moreover, Ao Kuang can use his S1 Water Illusion for quick exits in sticky situations. This ability gives him Stealth for a few seconds. If enemies do get close, Ao Kuang can release this cloak and damage enemies around him.
9 Skip This God: Bastet
The Egyptian Goddess of Cats makes her presence known as one of the fastest Junglers in Smite. In the right hands, Bastet can quickly chase and eliminate slower gods.
Her S1 Pounce lets her make a leap attack and retreat from her original location. This ability, aided by S2 Razor Whip and S3 Ensnaring Claw, can help Bastet deal massive damage quickly. Moreover, her Ult Guardians of Bast allows her to use her cats to take down her enemies.
Unfortunately, since heroes such as Ao Kuang and Mercury provide excellent mobility to teams anyway, Bastet might not be the best pick for DPS.
8 Use This God: King Arthur
King Arthur shows players Smite's full potential for character combos. Moreover, he has two different sets of combos (Stances) he can interchange depending on the circumstances.
As such, King Arthur players will love switching in between these combo sets. His Standard stance relies on AOE and Crowd Control attacks. Meanwhile, his Combo stance lets him focus his attacks on specific targets.
Despite King Arthur's flexibility, players might find his two stances difficult to learn. However, players who take the time to know King Arthur's combo may benefit from high damage and crowd control potential.
7 Skip This God: Poseidon
Poseidon uses the wrath of the seas to his advantage. Thanks to his passive, Changing Tides, Poseidon's attacks deal more damage and increase his movement speed. This skill, combined with S2 Trident buff, makes him great for mid.
His S1 Tidal Surge gives a slight knockback to enemies. Lastly, his Ult Release The Kraken casts two concentric circles that not just deal damage, but also slow and stun opponents. While Poseidon is no pushover, his rather player-friendly moveset might motivate gamers to look for more challenging Gods to fight with.
6 Use This God: Hera
Hera, the Greek Queen of the Gods, comes to battle with Argus, her defender. As a Mage, she relies on a lot of AOE abilities. She deals much of her damage with her Ultimate Argus, the Defender, which she can summon easier thanks to her Passive Commanding Presence.
Her S3 Divine Shroud shields her while boosting Argus' damage, and her S2 Polymorph turns Gods into monsters when hit.
Hera has great survivability and low cooldowns. Unfortunately, Hera does have a slow buildup early game, and has to rely on items for her lifesteal capabilities.
5 Skip This God: Freya
Despite being a Mage, Smite's Freya of Norse Mythology allows players to do DPS and a bit of jungling.
S1 Irradiate and S2 Pulse make her attacks have added magic damage and range, respectively, causing significant damage against minions. Her Ult Valkyrie's Discretion lets her fly and attack AOE, which can be devastating in a clash.
In the right hands, Freya becomes a mid-lane juggernaut. However, other Gods who jungle successfully can dominate her in the late game, especially with tanks that focus their attention on her.
4 Use This God: Horus
Horus fits well with Support players who want to fight on the front lines. Thanks to his high mobility and high defense, Horus can help position his teammates wherever they need to be.
His Passive Resolute increases his protection whenever he's hit. His S1 Updraft not only knocks opponents up in the air, but it can also summon a second attack as well. His S2 Fracture stuns Gods it hits, while his S3 Protector's Surge lets him teleport and heal allies. Lastly, his Ultimate repositions allies from a certain location to Horus' current location.
3 Skip This God: Nike
In Greek Mythology, being blessed with Nike almost guarantees victory. In Smite, Nike specializes on knock-up skills, and she can serve as an excellent tank-damage hybrid.
Nike players will quickly notice her ability to do Crowd Control and disrupt enemy formations. Her S1 Rend can remove protections and disarm opponents. S2 Barrier Formation gives her a shield at the cost of speed. S3 Valiant Leap gives Nike her signature knock-up. Lastly, Ult Sentinel Of Zeus gives her both a health shield and a slowing attack.
Tank fans can see why Nike can be an ideal choice for a character. Unfortunately, canceling Nike's S1 ruins her entire combo, and she only does moderate damage.
2 Use This God: Bellona
Bellona turns the battle to her favor thanks to her wide array of Crowd Control and utility skills. She displays high CC and high damage potential, which can give them the advantage of team fights. Bellona is a force to be reckoned with.
Her Passive Master of War increases Bellona's movement speed and protections whenever she's hit. All her skills (S1 Shield Bash, S2 Bludgeon, and S3 Scourge) damages enemies in front of her and around her. Her Ult Eagle's Rally increases physical attacks of her allies while stunning opponents that take damage.
1 Skip This God: Cabrakan
Cabrakan serves as the Mayan God of Mountains, capable of causing frightening tremors. In Smite, he makes an excellent tank and damage-dealer under the right hands.
Cabrakan's Passive Shadow Zone reduces damage, and his S2 Refraction Shield enables his shields to store energy regularly. He can also use S2 and unleash a frontal AOE attack. His S1 Seismic Crush buffs him while S3 Tremors drags enemies towards him, giving Cabrakan room for combos. Lastly, Ult Tectonic Shift works wonders to disrupt formations.
Unfortunately, Cabrakan's slow nature can prove fatal. His S1 serves as his only speed boost for escapes, and S3 leaves him stationary.
