While plenty of professional gamers are capable of maintaining laser focus throughout their matches, a few can get distracted from time to time. Usually, when that happens the player has the potential to recover and avoid defeat, but for others, like this Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament participant, it leads to an embarrassing loss.

During the DAT BlastZone 28 Grand Finals for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Plastic Poptart (Lucina) was facing off against Severe Calamari (Wolf). At the time the clip starts Calamari is at an advantage, with two stocks to Poptart’s one. But Poptart quickly builds damage on Calamari and sends him flying off the board, essentially evening up the match at one stock each.

Unfortunately, the impressive play from Poptart prompts one of the Super Smash Bros. player’s friends to come out of the audience and hug him. He tries to brush it off but ends up jumping off the stage and enacting a downward attack that ends up giving Calamari the win. It’s an embarrassing moment both for Poptart and the friend, who is clearly apologetic in the clip.

We’ve seen tournament clips where one of the participants celebrates too early and ends up losing, but this is the first time we’ve ever seen someone lose because a friend celebrated too early. Poptart was distracted and didn’t realize what he was doing at the time.

The good news is that Severe Calamari allowed Plastic Poptart to replay the match with each player at 1 stock. Since neither combatant had yet to damage the other, it was easy to make things fair and redo the final showdown. And as it turns out, Poptart was able to win that round, go on to win the winners bracket match, and defeat Severe Calamari a second time in the losers bracket. It’s impressive that Poptart was able to recover from the incident and then win a couple more matches, but props are due Calamari as well, who could have easily taken the round win.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
