PlayStation’s roster of iconic characters is nearly as broad as Nintendo’s, even if they don’t carry quite the same weight. However, PlayStation has been focusing its efforts on a select few of these iconic characters since the PS4 hit shelves, leaving some stuck in the past. PaRappa the Rapper and Jak and Daxter are some of the biggest franchises, but Sly Cooper may take the cake. Luckily, it appears that Sly Cooper may be making a comeback.

The news comes by way of @Shpeshal_Nick, co-founder of XboxEra and a leaker with a solid track record. According to the leaker, their “normal” source has confirmed that Sly Cooper will be making a return, following similar reports that Shpeshal_Nick heard from a newer source for PlayStation leaks. However, the leaker didn’t reveal any other information, saying that this is simply an update on the situation, which he regularly receives DMs for.

The most recent Sly Cooper game was Thieves in Time, which was released in 2013 for the PS3. The franchise hasn’t seen a new entry since then, leaving the PS4 console generation without its own new Sly Cooper game. Of course, the developer traditionally behind the Sly Cooper games, Sucker Punch Productions, has been working on different games, namely Infamous: Second Son and the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima.

It’s unclear which studio will develop the new Sly Cooper game if the leak is accurate. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was developed by Sanzaru games, which previously helped develop The Sly Collection. It’s possible that the studio returns to work on yet another entry in the franchise, though there are a lot of possibilities as far as what could be in the works, and a lot of it depends on how Sony wants to handle the return.

It’s possible that the original Sly Cooper game gets the remake treatment, similar to what happened with Ratchet and Clank. If so, a remake could be handled by BluePoint Games. After all, Sony acquired Bluepoint Games officially recently, following the studio handling the high-profile Demon’s Souls remake, as well as several others. It would be a good fit for the studio, but the developer is also said to be working on an original game rather than a remake.

Of course, it’s important to take all of this information with a grain of salt for now. While Sly Cooper is one of the most important PlayStation characters out there, it’s not safe to bet on anything until the game is officially announced.

A Sly Cooper game is rumored to be in development.
