Mega Crit’s single-player deckbuilding game Slay the Spire officially released for PC in early 2019 and was nominated for a number of awards including Best Indie Game, Most Innovative Gameplay, and Excellence in Design. Slay the Spire has since been launched on iOS, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, with an Android version also planned for the future.

With its current Steam rating of “Overwhelmingly Positive” based on nearly 72,000 reviews, it’s little wonder that the game’s unique fusion of deckbuilding and roguelike games has attracted the attention of tabletop enthusiasts. Contention Games, a board game publisher, recently announced that they plan to create a physical version of Slay the Spire for 1 to 4 players.

The company will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to help fund development of the Slay the Spire board game in Spring 2021, and those interested in supporting the effort can sign up for a newsletter on Contention Games’ website to be notified of updates.

The video game version of Slay the Spire is primarily a single-player experience, although the title presents daily challenges with a leaderboard that resets at the end of the day. Contention Games’ board game adaptation will feature cooperative gameplay, although how exactly this will be implemented has yet to be revealed.

The Slay the Spire video game features four unique characters to choose from at the beginning of the game, each with access to different types of cards and abilities. Players earn a variety of rewards at the end of each round such as special cards, curses, and relics that grant buffs, debuffs, and additional abilities as the game progresses. By default, players can see what the opponent team will do on its turn, allowing for strategic planning to counter or negate some actions.

Slay the Spire is available on iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
