Indie developers dominated the downloadable gaming scene in 2010, with games like Super Meat Boy, Raskulls and Dead Nation. Fire Hose Games is prepping to continue this domination  in 2011 with their debut title Slam Bolt Scrappers. Eithan Glinert, founder and Fire Chief, describes Slam Bolt Scrappers as “an insane mash-up of building and brawling.” It looks like Fire Hose Games is aiming to make their mark with this interesting mix of puzzler and brawler.

At first glance SBS resembles Tetris, though the game is a bit more complex than that. Unlike games where the goal is to clear the screen, such as Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Castlevania Puzzle, SBS promotes building the biggest tower possible. Gamers take the role of a Scrapper, which they use to take down Creeps. These enemies drop the building blocks needed to create a tower that can be equipped with different types of weapons, depending on the color of each block.

The bigger players build up a particular color, the larger their corresponding weapons become. Gamers then use these towers of mass destruction to take down their opponent’s tower. Check the trailer below to see the game in action.

Co-op looks like a major aspect of Slam Bolt Scrappers. Up to four players can square off against each other in battle mode or team up in the campaign to take down massive bosses, such as a giant robot with face lasers. Not lasers that shoot from its eyes, but its face!

As stated before, in SBS players will be able to take on the role of a Scrapper, and currently two of them are nameless. Fire Hose Games is asking gamers to help them name these two characters.

Right now they’re only known as the Angel of Scrapping and the Masked Menace. Fans can head over to the Fire Hose Games website and vote on which name best suits these two brawlers. The results will be revealed next week.

Slam Bolt Scrappers is expected to be released exclusively on PSN in early 2011.
