Game Breaking Skyward Sword Bug

Continuing the strong run of excellent titles in the Zelda franchise, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a game that features a beautiful world and sharp gameplay elements. We at Game Rant loved the game, and thousands upon thousands of players have also sung its praises.

But, as is all-too-common with big new releases lately, there is a potentially game-breaking bug in Skyward Sword that, for the moment, could wreck the player's entire journey.

The issue revolves around players doing a series of tasks in a particular order that, once completed, prevents the "Song of the Hero" quest from being continued, forcing players to use a previous save that is not affected by the following inauspicious sequence of events:

  1. At the beginning of the quest, go to Lanayru Desert to retrieve the song of the Thunder Dragon.
  2. In the Lanayru Mine, speak with Golo the Goron.
  3. Complete the Thunder Dragon's event, and receive his song.
  4. Before heading to the forest or volcano regions, speak with Golo in the mine again.
  5. At this point, the forest and volcano events will no longer occur, making it impossible to continue.

Zelda Informer was first notified of the issue by alert players. When Nintendo caught wind of the issue, Sharon Matheny released a statement.

"We have been made aware of the issue that results in being unable to progress in the Song of the Hero quest. If the game has been saved after completing the sequence of events, it will no longer be possible to proceed through the game on that save file. The only options at that point are to either start the game over or to use an earlier save file to continue."

"This issue WILL NOT OCCUR if the Fire and Water Dragon songs have already been collected before collecting the Thunder Dragon's song. Talking to Golo in the Lanayru Caves will also NOT trigger this issue. If the game has been saved after completing the sequence of events, it will no longer be possible to proceed through the game on that save file. The only options at that point are to either start the game over or to use an earlier save file to continue."

"I wish I had a better answer, but I'm afraid there currently is no other fix available. I can assure, however, that we are documenting all feedback we receive on this issue. Thank you for your patience and support."

In other words, players who plan on completing the Thunder Dragon first should avoid Golo once they've obtained the Thunder Dragon's song.

While Nintendo is working on the issue beyond simply detailing the work-around, this presents a much broader issue with games today, as developers and publishers seem to be releasing more bug-ridden games than ever before (Skyrim for example).

Perhaps it's just a by-product of the number of games out there, or maybe the technology is so sophisticated and complex that bugs at release are inevitable. Maybe I was just naive back in 1998 and didn't see any bugs or glitches, but I don't remember anything like this occurring when I played the Ocarina of Time.

Ranters, have you discovered this glitch? Any thoughts on the larger issue at hand?

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is available now for the Wii.
