Few games can match Skyrim in terms of scope and breadth, and that's only one reason that the game remains so popular nearly ten years after its release. In fact, it's so big that players to this day manage to find new items, armors, and locations in Skyrim that they haven't seen before. Indeed, there's a lot of big and small details scattered throughout the game, including one place every player has visited: Whiterun.

There's plenty for players to see and interact with in Whiterun, including the Skyforge, Breezehome, the Gildergreen, Jorrvaskr the home of the Companions, Dragonsreach, and far more. Like many towns in Skyrim, there is an Inn with this one known as the Bannered Mare, but one small detail makes it stand out from all the other buildings in Whiterun.

Dragons aren't just important to the Dragonborn and Skyrim as a game, but as part of the culture and history of the region. Whiterun hold is no different, with practically every major building being adorned with dragons on the roof. However, as pointed out by Redditor carlashaw, the Bannered Mare does not: it has horse heads as part of its design on the roof. On the one hand, this seems like a given since the name of the building itself means bannered with a female horse, but on the other hand, it's a small distinction that many players may not have realized.

After all, players will travel into Whiterun several times during their Skyrim playthrough, with many traveling through the Bannered Mare quite a few times too. It's involved in several quests and storylines, such as the Alik'r bounty hunts and fugitive Saadia in "My Time of Need," players must meet someone here after Emperor Titus Mede II is killed in "To Kill an Empire," and is involved in the "Whispering Door" quest line. In other words, players may travel here so much that the small details sink into the background, despite being clearly distinct.

There's little doubt this is due to the nature of Skyrim's design: it's big but detailed, it's got a lot of depth but the little details matter too, and it has remained at the core of gamer culture for several years. All of this bodes well for the next entry in the franchise, but as The Elder Scrolls 6 remains in a design phase, fans will likely be sticking to Skyrim's details for quite a few years more.

Skyrim is available now on all major platforms.
