The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles have been out for over a year at this point, but developers have only scratched the surface of the consoles' potential. Thanks to most major games being cross-gen releases, the vast majority of games on PS5 and Xbox Series X have been limited in scope, but that will change as time goes on. One thing that gamers can expect to see from the new consoles in the years ahead is more games using advanced engines like Unreal Engine 5, the power of which was recently showcased by the visually-stunning Matrix Awakens tech demo.

There's a great deal of hype behind the potential of Unreal Engine 5 and what it will mean for video game graphics moving forward. And while there haven't been many mainstream video game projects released that use Unreal Engine 5, some fans and hobbyists have taken matters into their own hands, producing content that shows what games may look like when powered by the engine. A recent Ocarina of Time Unreal Engine 5 project has turned plenty of heads, and so too has an image of what Skyrim could look like using the technology.

Reddit user Battlefront_Captures, also known as Cinematic Captures on YouTube, recently shared an image of what Whiterun from Skyrim could look like in Unreal Engine 5. The image has gotten significant attention from Skyrim fans, earning over 23,000 upvotes since it was posted.

Based on the reaction to Skyrim's Whiterun in Unreal Engine 5, it seems safe to say that many would be open to seeing a full-fledged version of Bethesda's open world RPG powered by the engine. There have been many jokes about how many times Bethesda has re-released Skyrim, but a new version of the game with Unreal Engine 5 graphics may actually be a re-release that's seen as a worthwhile endeavor in the eyes of the fans.

Alternatively, some fans may want to see other Elder Scrolls games get remakes with the Unreal Engine 5 treatment instead. Back in October, an Elder Scrolls fan created a video that showed what Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion would look like in Unreal Engine 5, and the results of that were quite impressive as well.

It's unclear if Bethesda is planning to release anymore Elder Scrolls remakes or remasters in the near future, but fans shouldn't hold their breath. Right now the company is busy developing its next open world RPG Starfield and it's also developing the long-awaited Elder Scrolls 6 as well.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim - Anniversary Edition is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
