Given Bethesda's reputation for releasing games that have some bugs, sometimes the community feels the need to take matters into its own hands to improve the base version. Fallout 76 is an example of a title the company released that has been riddled with bugs since day one, though updates and patches continue to fix issues. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is another example. As popular and epic as the game is, many will likely agree that it's not exactly perfect, so people are willing to put in the work to tweak the game to make it better.

Take this new mod from user Ersh, which was uploaded to Nexus Mods a couple of days ago. The modification looks at the third-person mode of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and improves it by adding new features, and just generally tweaking it for performance. The description on the page says it overhauls the perspective, introducing true 360-degree movement, hence the name of the mod being True Directional Movement.

One of the other things it adds is a custom target lock system, whereby players can lock on to an enemy to make sure they don't lose track of them during a fight. It also adds an animated health bar, including ones for bosses, head tracking, and projectile aim support. Basically, it adds quite a lot to the third-person mode, making it more similar to modern day action RPGs. It's one of those mods that looks at gameplay mechanics, as opposed to aesthetics, such as the mod which adds a jet plane to Skyrim.

Currently, True Directional Movement has been downloaded more than 22,000 times, with over 1,500 endorsements. It's clear that this is an add-on that's been sorely missing from the game. Some of the best Skyrim mods do so much for the base game. As well as adding new quests, improving the graphics, or generally making a more immersive experience, to overhaul the third-person perspective is something that is going to intrigue a lot of players, particularly for those who prefer it in third-person but are not keen on the current state of it.

What will be interesting to find out, is how the community will go about modding the sixth installment of the series. Sadly, with Phil Spencer confirming that The Elder Scrolls 6 isn't coming out until after Fable, fans will have to wait until post-2023 before can they start modding it. For now, there's still a ton of ways to improve on the already hugely successful Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
