Solstheim is an island between worlds: part-Skyrim, part-Morrowind. Solstheim's diversity is reflected in its people, its natural environment, and the creatures that appear there.

While the north of the island is much like Skyrim, with snowy tundra and forests, the south of the island reflects the environment of Vvardenfell. In particular, Morrowind's ashlands extend the south of Solstheim as this area lies in the shadow of Red Mountain, the volcano that spews ash on surrounding lands. This environment means a variety of creatures inhabit Solstheim, some of which are lifted straight from The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. Not all of these creatures are benign, and some are more dangerous than any on the continent.

10 Hulking Draugr

Hulking Draugr

Hulking draugr are a more powerful variant of the usual draugr found in tombs across Skyrim. It's clear on sight that these draugr differ from others of their kind, as their appearance is very distinct.

Hulking draugr have dark brown skin and wear necklaces made of skeletal hands. Their armor is more bulky than other armors, which adds to their intimidating appearance. Hulking draugr, like their lower level cousins, are best taken down with fire.

9 Serpentine Dragon

Serpetine Dragon

Serpentine dragons vary from the usual dragons by their snake-like heads. As they only appear at higher levels, they're more challenging to defeat than their cousins. One of the most notable of these creatures is Miraak's personal dragon.

Serpentine dragons aren't necessarily any stronger than other dragons. However, as they only appear at higher levels, fights against them are always challenging. Their formidable, serpentine appearance add to their menacing aura, but as with all dragons, players can take them down with a few well-placed Shouts.

8 Ash Guardian

Ash Guardian Skyrim

Ash guardians are a kind of summoned daedra, with the appearance and function of an atronach. To attack, they spray burning hot ash at their enemies.

Some mages on Solstheim summon ash guardians against the Dragonborn in battle. If the Dragonborn gets too close to it, the ash guardian will cast a flame explosion. Since ash guardians never flee from combat, they're useful as conjured allies – but also one of the deadliest creatures on Solstheim.

7 Ash Spawn

Ash Spawn

Ash spawn are the reanimated remains of Dunmer, who cremate their dead. They use deadly fire attacks, and tend to attack in packs.

Ash spawn have found the perfect environment in Solstheim. The ashlands of the island are infested with these creatures, which spawn randomly to attack hapless passersby. Ash spawn have the advantage of surprise, and as they tend to rise up very close to their victims, it's almost impossible to ambush them.

6 Burnt Spriggan

Skyrim Dawnguard Spriggan Earth Mother

Burnt spriggans are a variant of the spriggans, a kind of nature spirit found across Skyrim. They're far tougher and more deadly than normal spriggans, and chase their foes far beyond their territory. Their fiery attacks and temper apparently comes from the Red Mountain and the ash which constantly rains down upon them.

Unlike normal spriggans, Burnt Spriggans don't drop taproot as loot upon death; instead, they drop Burnt Spriggan Wood. These creatures live in the ashlands of southern Solstheim. They have resistance to fire, and explode in fire when they're at critical health, which can take out lower level players.

5 Albino Spiders

Spider Skyrim

Albino spiders are the result of experiments by a particularly crazed mage. They come in different elemental forms. In addition to poison, they have fire attacks. Albino spiders also attack in groups, which makes them particularly dangerous and unpredictable.

Albino spiders also have the opportunity to provide a resource. The Dragonborn can use the laboratory facilities in White Ridge Barrow to make their own elemental albino spiders using gems. Albino spiders don't respawn, which means they're a fairly rare enemy and resource.

4 Dwarven Ballista

A Dwarven Ballista in Skyrim

The ballista is found only in dwarven ruins, and is one of their most deadly constructions. This automaton is basically a giant crossbow mounted on four legs, which allow it to move wherever it wishes. It fires a powerful bolt that can pierce any armor.

A head-on hit from a ballista bolt can cause heavy damage to almost anything. Luckily, the ballista has a slow reload time, which gives the Dragonborn opportunity to take it down before it can fire its next shot.

3 Lurker Vindicator

Lurker Solstheim

Lurkers spawn around shrines to Miraak. They are a dangerous species of daedra, originating in Hermaeus Mora's plane of Oblivion, Apocrypha. Although the lurkers originally all served Hermaeus Mora, Miraak has taken control of a portion of them on Solstheim. The player may encounter them randomly attacking people on Solstheim and, most notably, when the Dragonborn cleanses the the stones across the island.

It's best to take on lurkers from a distance, as their short-range attacks deliver a deadly poison. They can also spit acid. Archery is particularly effective against them, especially while sneaking.

2  Ash Spawn Immolator

Ash Spawn

Deadly and unpredictable, Ash spawn immolators are more powerful versions of the common ash spawn. Their fire attacks are incredibly powerful, and they manifest in deadly packs. Ash spawn immolators also have up to four times the health as regular ash spawn.

Thankfully, Ash spawn immolators are vulnerable in close combat, as their melee attacks are not as powerful as their magic. Like all ash spawn, they are most vulnerable to Frost spells and enchantments.

1 Werebears

Werebears skyrim

Werewolves are found across Skyrim, but werebears are only found on Solstheim. Werebears are far bigger and hardier than werewolves when transformed, and while most players can manage a single one, they live in packs of three to five.

Bear lycanthropy plagues the people of Solstheim, particularly in the Skaal village. While the werebears live as humans together in the wilds, they wander the island as dangerous monsters and sometimes end up transforming the Nords of Solstheim. Players can see this in Torkild's story, a missing member of the Skaal village who had been turned into a werebear.
