As wonderfully immersive Skyrim is, there will always be limitations on every aspect of the game. There are always going to be places that the player can't travel to, dialogue lines that aren't an option, and beloved characters that tragically cannot be romanced.

The list of marriage candidates is a long one, full of appealing options. But in the vast province of Skyrim, it's always a possibility to fall for someone that sadly didn't make the cut. Some of the most well-rounded, fleshed-out characters in the game aren't included in the romance options. Here are ten characters in Skyrim that the Dragonborn currently cannot romance, but should be able to.

10 Isran: A Stern Leader In Need Of Love

Skyrim Isran In Fort Dawnguard

Perhaps Isran isn't initially the friendliest member around Fort Dawnguard. However, after getting to know the fearless leader, it's clear that he's a compassionate person deep down. Isran's hatred for vampires and dedication to protecting the world from their rule keeps him strong. Isran has an admirable sense of duty and isn't easy to shake.

This handsome leader of the Dawnguard is often preoccupied with his work, but match him with a Dragonborn that is equally as dedicated to his cause as he is, and they'd make a perfect duo. A pair of vampire hunters would make for one of the strongest power couples in all of Skyrim.

9 Illdi: The Under-Appreciated Bard

Skyrim Illdi In Solitude

Poor Illdi is a talented student at the Bard's College in Solitude; however, she seems to be the subject of some ridicule. When it comes to both the teachers and the other students, Illdi doesn't appear to be very popular.

Likely due to her less-than-favorable reputation, Illdi is very insecure about herself and her skills as a bard. Yet, she's a kind, beautiful, and dedicated bard. Anyone would be lucky to be able to call her their wife. It would be a great blessing if the Dragonborn themselves were the one to help her realize her true potential.

8 Hold Guards: A True Arrow To The Knee

Skyrim Hold Guards Male And Female

It seems being a Hold Guard can often feel like a thankless job. The brave guards of each Skyrim hold keep the peace and ensure that all the citizens are safe from whatever dangers may be lurking. Although the guards' voice lines are limited, they somehow have a very distinct character to them.

Being able to marry a guard would make Skyrim feel truly immersive. Considering all the work and business the Dragonborn conducts with the Jarls in each hold, it's only natural that they'd run into a guard whose kindness and loyalty catches their attention.

7 Elisif The Fair: A Royal Affair

Skyrim Jarl Elisif The Fair In Blue Palace

Elisif the Fair is the widowed Jarl of the hold of Solitude. She's a kind soul grieving the loss of her husband Torygg, the previous High King of Skyrim before the Stormcloaks began their rebellion. Being able to spend time with poor Elisif would perhaps help her finally assume her position as the High Queen; as she wishes to stop the forces that murdered Torygg before taking her rightful place.

It's clear that Elisif is a beautiful and kind-hearted leader. A romance in which the Dragonborn helps her handle her political duties, as well as move on from mourning, would make a heartwarming storyline. Not to mention, this marriage would make for many political changes for the Dovahkiin themselves.

6 Captain Lonely-Gale: One Less Lonely Gale

Skyrim Captain Loney-Gale Candlehearth Hall

Captain Lonely-Gale is a former sea captain, still keeping the title even after his retirement. He's a man with a tragic story of losing his family and not knowing how to spend the rest of his days. It's clear he's handsome and still fairly young, so it's no surprise that fans wanted to marry him.

Though he's sometimes gloomy, the Captain is surprisingly friendly and kind. There are unique bits of dialogue that can be heard about the Captain losing his beloved wife and refusing to try and find new love, but who knows? Perhaps the Dragonborn could be his second shot at happiness.

5 Astrid: A Forbidden Love

Players can get Blade of Woe from Astrid

Many players decided to indulge in their darker side and join the notorious clan of trained assassins, the Dark Brotherhood. Unfortunately, the charming (yet sinister) leader of the Dark Brotherhood is already married to another member, Arnbjorn.

Choosing not to make Astrid romanceable due to her already existing marriage was a huge mistake. Astrid is a popular character among Skyrim fans, and many would love to be able to call her their wife. However, it does seem like arranging a marriage with the leader of a league of assassins wouldn't be very welcome in the Temple Of Mara.

4 Lord Harkon: A Love Hidden In The Shadows

Lord Harkon in Castle Volkihar

The ability to marry into the Volkihar Clan sounds appealing on its own. Add the handsome pure-blooded Vampire Lord, Lord Harkon and suddenly the Dawnguard quests feel like a thrilling love story. For those players that decided to join the Volkihar Clan, marrying Harkon would definitely be an interesting romance.

A Dragonborn that aids Harkon and the clan would make the two of them a truly powerful couple, with the potential to rule over Skyrim. However, although estranged, Harkon is in fact married to Valerica. Although the two resent each other, perhaps Harkon could work out a divorce of some kind before eloping.

3 Hroki: A Hard-Working Beauty

Skyrim Hroki At Silver-Blood In

Hroki may have an extravagant look and expensive taste, but that doesn't mean she's a princess that's been given all of her luxuries. She's the daughter of the inn-keepers, Kleppr and Frabbi, at the Silver-Blood Inn. Players can find her shopping near the market stalls in Markarth. When not spending her time leisurely, she's hard at work at her parent's inn, cleaning or taking care of guests.

It may not be apparent at first, but Hroki is a hard worker when it comes to supporting her parents. Perhaps after marrying the Dragonborn, the player could even unlock new quests helping out at the Silver-Blood Inn.

2 Ulfric Stormcloak: Love At First Sight

Ulfric Stormcloak

At the beginning of the Dragonborn's journey, Ulfric Stormcloak is one of the first faces the player sees in the back of the execution carriage. This veteran of the Great War is a natural-born leader, and clearly has a charm to him that compels others to follow in his footsteps to help his cause.

In a province taken over by the Imperials, it takes true bravery and unshakeable character to start an uprising. What's more, since the Dragonborn and the Jarl of Windhelm both have the power of the Thu'um on their side, they would truly make for a fearsome duo.

1 Serana: A Hidden Gem

the vampire standing unharmed in sunlight.

Serana was the star of the Dawnguard DLC: a breathtaking ancient pure-blooded vampire that joins the Dragonborn on their journey to stop the tyranny of her own kind. She was a strong ally to have alongside the battle. Even after the player completes the main questline, Serana is still available to recruit as a follower. However, being a follower is as far as the Dragonborn's relationship goes with this charming vampire.

To many players' dismay, Serana isn't a romanceable character despite how close she and the player grow during the storyline. It's such a shame the player can't give her a real place to call home. It seems as if poor Serana is doomed to live in a fort filled with vampires for the rest of her years, or in the stark Fort Dawnguard.
