Praiseworthy and popular though The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is, it's a game that is by no means perfect. The Bethesda-made fantasy epic is often fraught with weird glitches, which require patches and hotfixes to mend, sometimes with the community doing some of the work off its own back. Recently, players of the Anniversary Edition, which came out recently, have been reporting a number of issues with the new re-release which the studio promised it would tackle head on. Well, it seems as though a recent update has indeed fixed some of the issues, but is now causing issues in other areas.

According to a recent report, Bethesda has rolled out a patch for the Anniversary Edition of Skyrim which, while fixing some of the main issues reported recently, is creating some additional problems, especially for mods. On top of that, because the AE version of the game is an upgrade of the Special Edition which came out in 2016, the new bugs are affecting the latter iteration as well.

The main crux of the problem seems to be that the new update causes compatibility issues with some of the many Skyrim mods that are an integral part of the gaming experience, and helping to keep the game going. The report goes on to say that many mods will likely need updates themselves before they are compatible with this latest version of the game, adding that the Skyrim Script Extender, which is a key piece of software for mods and modding, will also need to bring its version up to par with the main game before mods are playable again.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition Dwarven Mechanical Horse

When the Anniversary Edition dropped on November 11, fans noticed that Skyrim had a major glitch which caused the game to freeze on a black screen, which was eventually put down to this build running scripts quicker than previous versions. Bethesda did announce that a patch was in the works and, while it was allegedly taking longer than expected, it seems to have been rolled out this week. However, it looks as though another hotfix is urgently needed. It's possible the studio is already on the case, though there has been no word at the time of writing.

As well as being a celebration of the game's tenth year of release, Skyrim Anniversary Edition also brings new content, including extra weapons and a fishing mini-game. It's been one of the biggest releases of the past decade. Given its scope, it's perhaps expected that there would be some issues, but Bethesda will need to be quick out the door with a fix for these latest problems. For now, players can use a mod to roll back to a previous version of the game.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is available for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series S/X.
