The days of Skyrim’s silent protagonist are over as a modder has recently used Artificial Intelligence to give Master Chief's voice to the Dragonborn. Now, Skyrim players will be able to hear the protagonist’s voice beyond when they are using shouts.

Despite Skyrim being older than 11 years, its modding scene is as active as it was many years ago. Even after Bethesda stopped launching new expansions and content, the community has worked hard to improve the title with various mods that have released over the yeras. Now, new AI technologies are allowing modders to expand their projects with voice acting.

With the new Master Chief Voicepack for Skyrim, players can now use Halo’s Master Chief voice as the Dragonborn. The project, which was created by FearTcb, can be downloaded right now and only requires the Dragon Voice-Over mod to work properly. In a video released together with the mod, it’s possible to hear the protagonist asking questions to a few NPCs, and it really sounds just like the protagonist of Halo.

Like similar projects, such as the one that used AI to voice Morrowind, the sound is impressive, showing how Artificial Intelligence has been a game changer in the modder scene. By using these programs, it’s possible to create endless hours of content by having only a small sample of someone’s voice, which greatly diminishes the efforts of actually spending hours recording voice acting, a fairly expensive process. However, these projects often raise questions regarding the legality of the content generated with AI. The voice actor of Master Chief, for example, never gave permission for people to use his voice in Skyrim.

In related news, the Elder Scrolls community is finding other interesting uses for AI which are not related to voiceovers. Recently, an Elder Scrolls player used ChatGTP to generate quests for Skyrim. By using ChatGTP prompts, the creator was able to devise a system similar to the radiant quest system which is already built into the game, but with a bit more complexity. The process may take a lot of refining to actually work as intended, as it’s still struggling with complex quests, but it shows that the potential for creating more content with ease is there, and nobody knows what AI will make possible in the near future.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim - Anniversary Edition is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
