Most games can only dream of having the kind of longevity that The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim currently enjoys, which is still going strong after more than a decade has passed since being released. One of the things that helps keep the game alive is the dedicated, and talented, modding community. The Elder Scrolls series is rife for having mods installed, and the fan base is only too eager to unleash their own custom add-ons that help to improve the game, or just add new content to it. In this instance, this one user decided to make some changes to the game's NPCs.

Uploading the files to Nexus Mods a couple of days ago, GaranSilent has shown just how much can be changed to make the already quite stunning-looking RPG look even better. Called "SOGS-NPCs Customizer," this Skyrim add-on alters the appearance of more than 100 characters within the game. Judging by the images alone on the mod page, it seems the user has done a rather spectacular job of touching up the character models to give them a whole new, or at least more modern, look.

While the description doesn't specify all the characters that have been improved, the images uploaded do show some notable examples, one of whom is the vampire companion Serana, as well as the College of Winterhold Altmer mage Ancano. On top of this, GaranSilent does say that their mod is "standalone," which means users won't need to have any other mods installed, adding that it's possible to install it no matter what other custom body types are currently in-use. However, they do say that "SOGS-NPCs Customizer" is currently "incompatible with any transformation."

Given that Skyrim is one of the few games to last more than ten years, it's surprising that fans are still finding things to do in the game. However, a lot of the reason why it's stood the test of time, and continues to do so, is due to the community. Bethesda keeps re-releasing the game on new systems, but it's the custom add-ons that really change things up to maintain a degree of freshness.

With Elder Scrolls 6 possibly coming out in 2024, maybe even earlier but that's wishful thinking, people are evidently trying to get as much mileage out of Skyrim as they can. With mods a-plenty that bring changes, improve on the vanilla format, and just generally tweak the overall experience for the better, it still feels like it's going to take a long time before the fan base turns its back on the decade-old game for good.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
