Over its decade long lifespan, Skyrim has become almost a meme. From the early days of the "take an arrow to the knee" in-joke, to the whole cluster of mods, such as the one that allows players to pet dogs, The Elder Scrolls 5 has surpassed being a mere game in one of the most famous Western RPG franchises ever released, and has become something of a rite of passage for gamers. Arguably, it's the PC mods that have kept the game going for as long as it has.

Now a new mod has just been uploaded to Nexus Mods which adds a small, animal companion to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, specifically a penguin. Named Winston, this flippered partner awaits players in Breezehome, the purchasable abode that's available in the city of Whiterun. Not only that, but Winston is himself accompanied by his child.

This friendly critter arguably takes the place of one of the game's most memorable companions, Lydia. Similar to Lydia, players can get Winston to accompany them on adventures and can issue commands, such as wait, follow and dismiss.

The fact that players can also use the mod to add hordes of penguins to Skyrim is testament to the kind of humor that the fan base has come to expect these days. Some people may want to tweak the graphics of the game to make it more realistic or immersive, while some just want to have fun and fill the world of Tamriel up with loveable critters. There truly is a mod for every Skyrim player out there.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available on every major platform. The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in development.
