An unofficial mod for Skyrim was released recently, which now makes it possible to play the epic Bethesda RPG with upscaled resolution technology, supporting Nvidia's DLSS, AMD's FSR, and even Intel's XeSS. As one of the most immersive open world games around, The Elder Scrolls 5 is noteworthy for its breathtaking visuals and awe-inspiring vistas. Of course, with the game being 11 years old at this point, it has aged, particularly in terms of its graphics, but mods have helped keep the title in good shape over the past decade or so.

As such, many fans jump at the chance to improve the overall look of the game. The unofficial image upscaling mod for Skyrim was announced not long ago and was being developed by Nexus Mods user PureDark. So no doubt there will be plenty who will be keen to give it a shot and see how it makes a difference. For those who don't know, upscaling is an algorithmic piece of tech that, put simply, redraws pixels onscreen to make the image comparable to a higher resolution without the game actually being at a higher resolution, thus not putting additional strain on the user's hardware, especially on PC.

With the mod now out, players can check out how well Skyrim will run with upscaling supported. The add-on supports the aforementioned variations of the algorithm from the three major tech companies, Nvidia, AMD, and Intel, the former of which, called Deep Learning Super Sampling, is only available for Nvidia RTX graphics cards. However, the other two are more open source and will work on any GPU. Specifically, the mod supports version 2.0 of AMD's FSR, or FidelityFX Super Resolution. The mod also has support for Nvidia DLAA, but again users will need an RTX card for it to work. Anyone who wants to try PureDark's add-on will also need a couple of plugins beforehand, such as SKSE.

Modding is a popular way of keeping Skyrim alive, and there are simply tons of ways to extend the play of this already pretty huge game. Everything from graphical tweaks, new missions, towns, and NPCs, bug fixes, and even just some that make things a bit silly are available right now. In all likelihood, it's the modding community that has helped keep the 2011 RPG in the limelight all these years.

While Bethesda continues to work on The Elder Scrolls 6, though no one has any idea when this next installment will see the light of day, Skyrim fans are continuing to busy themselves with all sorts of new ways to play the game. There will eventually come a time when people will be ready to move on, but that time is evidently not now.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is out now on PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
