There are many cooking and alchemy ingredients to be found while exploring the vast valleys and hills of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, but some specific items can only be found in certain locations--especially rare ingredients like Moon Sugar.
While players may come across Moon Sugar from time to time, it’s best to know where they can find some consistently, as it can be used as an ingredient in many helpful potion recipes, and for a popular mod. Players can use this guide to find out how to get Moon Sugar in Skyrim.
How to Get Moon Sugar in Skyrim
The best way to find Moon Sugar in Skyrim is to trade with the Khajiit Caravan shopkeepers. There are three Khajiit Caravans that travel between two towns each:
- Ri'saad's Caravan travels between Markarth and Whiterun.
- Ahkari’s Caravan travels between Dawnstar and Riften.
- Ma'dran Caravan travels between Windhelm and Solitude.
The Caravan and its NPCs can usually be found by the stables when they stop to stay near the towns. Players can also trade with the Khajiit Caravans in Skyrim and get Moon Sugar if they encounter them on the road in between towns.
The Khajiit’s supply of Moon Sugar is not unlimited, however, so they can’t be relied upon to farm the ingredient. Waiting 48 hours for a merchant restock can relocate the Caravan.
Other ways to get Moon Sugar in Skyrim include:
- Looted from Apothecary's Satchels.
- Looted from mages in Skyrim.
- Purchased from Apothecary merchants (rare).
- Found as loot at Cragslane Cavern in the Eastmarch area, above Shor’s Stone.
- Purchased from certain wandering traders.
- Purchased from Feran Sadri at Castle Volkihar in the Haafinger area (Dawnguard DLC exclusive).
What to Use Moon Sugar For in Skyrim
When using the alchemy skill in Skyrim to brew potions, Moon Sugar will provide these effects:
- Weakness to Fire.
- Resist Frost.
- Restore Magicka.
- Regenerate Magicka.
This means the ingredient can be used with others to create useful potions like Regenerate Magicka and Restore Magicka in Skyrim. These are very useful if players are using a magic build. The Resist Frost effect is also useful if players are fighting high-leveled enemies who use frost attacks. There are other more common ingredients that can also be used to provide these potion effects, so be careful to not waste the rare Moon Sugar.
There is also a popular Skyrim mod that makes it possible to make Skooma, and Moon Sugar is needed in order to brew the addictive consumable. It can then be sold to complete the fan-made Thieves Guild quest.
