Skyrim Wins Game of the Year at GDC

Last year in the midst of all the major releases that came out in the fall, there was one game that made a lasting impression on both players and the gaming industry as a whole. That game was Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

GDC has officially started and many people won't be surprised to hear that Skyrim has walked away with the top honor of Game of the Year.

This definitely isn't the first award Skyrim has won and it probably won't be the last. The title recently won several Interactive Achievement awards including: Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Story and Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction. Skyrim would've won all the awards, but it took an arrow to the knee.

Despite all the flaws and glitches in the game — especially those found on the PS3 versionSkyrim still continues to build an impressive collection of awards. We here at Game Rant even gave it an award for Best RPG during the 2011 Game Rant Video Game Awards, which should have been expected after we gave it such a high review score.

Skyrim wasn't the only winner at GDC. Portal 2 won for best game design and Supergiant Games won Best Downloadable Game and Best Debut for Bastion (see our review). Prior to Skyrim winning GoTY, Fez won the top honor at the 14th Annual Independent Games Festival Awards, a show that awards the best in the indie game community.

Other games that were nominated for Game of the Year were: Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Dark Souls. Do you feel that another game should have won Game of the Year? Be sure to keep your eyes here for more breaking news from GDC.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is available now for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
