Apparently one massive world of stories and quests just isn’t enough for fans of The Elder Scrolls, and the same is true of the developers. Just a few weeks after Skyrim made its release date and was embraced by fans and critics alike, the plans are already in the works to bring even more content to the world of draugrs and dragons.
It’s not easy to have a better month than Skyrim, as the incredibly popular RPG took home Game of the Year at the Spike VGAs Saturday night, even amidst the various technical issues that have plagued the game during its first month.
DLC has been rumored to be a part of the game since June, and considering the wide assortment of DLC offerings for Oblivion, it is no surprise that Skyrim will take a similar route. Bethesda‘s Todd Howard didn’t go into too much detail with Joystiq at the awards show about the studio’s future plans for the game, but did give a sense of what the team is spending their time planning:
“ways to make the game better, not just have more, because the game is so big. So we’re going through ideas right now, and processing everything people are doing in the game, and trying to think of ways that we can improve it.”
Howard didn’t give an estimated date when fans can expect future DLC releases for Skyrim, but did promise that there would be multiple offerings, and that “[t]hey won’t be quick, and they’ll have a lot of meat on them.”
When looking back at the DLC for Oblivion, a few were mostly cosmetic like the Horse Armor and the Orrery. The Vile Layer, Thieves Den and Wizard’s Tower offered more content as new “homes” for the player, and the Mehrunes Razor dungeon, while only one location, was entertaining enough but all of these were fairly minor to the game itself.
Anyone who has been keeping up with the various YouTube videos surrounding the latest game knows that there are more than a few ways for fans to find fun within Skyrim. While these various glitches and exploits may have been unforeseen by the developers themselves, Howard revealed that his team has taken notice. The magical buckets exploit in particular has become a point of contention at Bethesda’s offices:
“I think our favorite really is putting the buckets on the heads… It was like day two, and we went, what? Do we fix that? Our lead programmer is pissed and wants to fix it, and I said I’m not sure we should. That’s one of those where maybe we leave it in.”
The massive, free-flowing world of The Elder Scrolls will always allow players to shape and affect their own story, but the idea of doing the same for another player has long been on fans’ minds. Howard was asked whether this franchise (and Skyrim specifically) would venture into the multiplayer universe, and the idea wasn’t dismissed immediately:
“You can never say never to anything like that, but it’s not what our focus is. This type of game is where our hearts are, what we get excited about, and that’s what we want to focus on. We don’t want to lose that focus and we never want to sacrifice anything in the single player game just to have it be multiplayer.”
All multiplayer or MMO speculation aside, we plan on holding Howard to his word that the DLC will be significant and not just a chance to spend $3 for Elven/Steel armor for your horse. Considering what we already know about Skyrim and its size, there is plenty of room for a lot of new content. While a pipe dream, there’s always the hope that it extends into Cyrodiil or Morrowind, considering those locations do exist within the game.
I’d even settle for an underground alcove that had some living Dwemer in it. That one… might still be a pipe dream.
