The dragons of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim are magnificent creatures capable of bestowing great terror. It would seem as if dragons like Paarthurnax are immortal because of how many eras they live. Judging by Paarthurnax's aging appearance, however, it is clear they do die eventually; if not slain by the Dragonborn first.

Taking a closer look, we can see that each Skyrim dragon isn't born equal. As part of Skyrim, the following dragons are some of the most influential in video games. The uniqueness of each dragon gives one of the greatest games of all time tremendous lasting appeal. This is ranking the 10 coolest dragons of Skyrim.

10 Elder Dragon

They aren't the rarest dragons to find in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but they possess incredible power that requires players to be around level 38 to defeat them. The Elder Dragon can spit hot fire or cold breath. You may even encounter one who is level 50, making them one of the fiercest enemies in the vanilla game. With DLC, however, Elder Dragon's are a mid-difficult dragon. Don't be intimidated by their size and vicious attacks; you can defeat one with sufficient willpower.

9 Nahagliiv

Naghaliiv is a servant of Adluin, and one of the most malevolent dragons of Skyrim. For those who purchased the Dragonborn add-on, Naghaliiv can be mounted. Naghaliiv can fire both Frost breath and Fire breath. After defeating him, Naghaliiv can be resurrected like many other dragons. Alduin appears and circles his burial mound before Naghaliiv appears.

Although there are good dragons like Paarthurnax, even Paarthurnax can have violent outbursts. It goes to show that the dragons of Skyrim are untamed beasts that are not meant to be trusted.

8 Sahrotaar

To encounter Sahrotaar, you'll need to purchase The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, which includes the DLC. Not much is known about Sahrotaar, except for how it performs in combat. Sahrotaar uses both Fire breath and Frost breath against its prey.

One can encounter by completing the  "At the Summit of Apocrypha" quest. Sahrotaar fights for you at some point in the quest, and it can be inferred that Sahrotaar was bent to serve Miraak, the antagonist of The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn.

7 Durnehviir

The appearance of Durnehviir is slightly different than that of a regular Skyrim dragon. Of course, in the mythical land of Skyrim, dragons are not ordinary creatures. Upon defeating Durnehviir, it's body erupts in a purplish flame.

Durnehviir has a small resemblance to the Frost Dragon because of its appearance and attacks, but for the most part, Durnehviir is unique. This dragon has four horns on its head and spikes protruding from its back. Durnehviir is a level 20 dragon that you encounter near the middle of the main story.

6 Ancient Dragon

The Ancient Dragon is not to be confused with the Elder Dragon. Although they have a similar appearance, there is a different hue of color on the Ancient Dragon. Ancient Dragons are more yellow and bronze.

Defeating an Ancient Dragon is not easy as they are some of the most fierce dragons in Skyrim. This level 50 dragon has over 3,000 health and can use a Fire breath or Frost breath. You'll need plenty of potions to vanquish this opponent. These dragons have survived for hundereds of years because of their resilience and intelligence.

5 Frost Dragon

This white, black, and grey dragon is the Frost Dragon. As you may have guessed, the Frost Dragon uses Frost breath to slay its opposition. Frost breath is useful for slowing down opponents and draining their stamina. The drawback to being a frost dragon is that is has a weakness to fire attacks.

The spiked appearance of the Frost Dragon makes it intimidating to its foes. Do not be to threatened by the Frost Dragon as it is only a level 30 dragon. However, if it manages to bite you a few times, there is a chance it will succeed in defeating the Dragonborn.

4 Skeletal Dragon

Do not be deceived by this dragon's appearance. Despite its lifeless appearance, this dragon is alive and not to be underestimated. There is no skin or muscle tissue on this dragon, which makes it confusing as to how it survives. It can be said that this dragon is undead since a dragon soul cannot be absorbed from it. Due to having inoperable wings, the Skeletal Dragon cannot take flight. Accompanied by the Skeletal Dragon, there are multiple skeletons who guard the Labyrinthian ruin.

3 Vulthuryol

This metallic bronze dragon is encountered in the underground capital city of Blackreach. Summoning Vulthuryol can be done after using the Unrelenting Force shout on the orb on top of the Blackreach Debate Hall. This dragon blends well with the themes of Skyrim. It is a high-level dragon that is level 50. Because of the enclosed space, Vulthuryol is unable to fly.

2 Paarthurnax

Paarthunrax is one of the most controversial dragons in Skyrim for having served under Alduin during the Dragon War. Paarthunrax may not be redeemed for the acts he committed. As a lieutenant for Alduin in the past, we would think Paarthunrax would be one of the most challenging dragons to defeat in Skyrim. On the contrary, Paarthunrax is a level 10 dragon. His appearance gives us the impression that Paarthunrax is old. Paarthunrax has faded color, tattered wings, and dull eyes.

1 Alduin

Alduin "The World Eater" is the main antagonist of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and is considered to be the harbinger of the apocalypse. In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Alduin attempts to regain control over Skyrim, but the Dragonborn prevents this from happening.

Alduin's piercing red eyes give us the impression that he is a ferocious dragon. Although he is not the weakest, there are more mighty dragons than Alduin. Using the combination of the Clear Skies shout and Frost magic will help you defeat the sinister Alduin.
