If there's one resounding success from the Borderlands franchise to call attention to, it's the art style of the series. Even above the Borderlands games' looter-shooter gameplay, it's well-known for its cell-shaded cartoonish art and animation. The Borderlands experience builds itself out around that style. This begs the question of what other games would feel like with Borderlands' art style, and with the power of mods, that question can be answered; The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim proves it.

A trailer for a recently released Borderlands filter mod for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim shows just what Bethesda's open-world RPG might look like with the looter-shooter's stylized visuals. There are two parts to the mod. The first is a set of new textures for Skyrim that captures the Borderlands art style. The second is an ENB, graphics settings that help create Borderlands' cartoon-like defining black outline around pretty much everything. Installing either just the textures or the textures and ENB should give Skyrim that unique Borderlands aesthetic.

To say that the mod is thorough would be quite an understatement. Mod developer Kanjs has altered the textures of Skyrim's armor, architecture, clothing, creatures, dungeons, plans, weapons, and more. That includes the vanilla content of Skyrim, as well as the expansion content from Dawnguard, Dragonborn, and Hearthfire. In fact, there are individual mods for each one of these specific areas if Skyrim players would rather just give one location of the game a Borderlands visual style.

Kanjs also has plans to support the content included in the Anniversary Edition of Skyrim in time, noting that an Anniversary Mod component of the Borderlands mod is coming soon. They're also working to add support so that the Borderlands visual mod will work with the impressive Static Mesh Improvement Mod, which greatly improves the quality of a significant number of static 3D models in Skyrim. No tentative dates are available for when these two additional features will be added.

The question deserving to be asked is whether Skyrim is better, or even more interesting, with the Borderlands mod enabled. The answer is probably going to be dependent on how much someone likes Borderlands. The mod absolutely does what it claims, particularly from close-up, but it's also quite a bit weird seeing that look in anything that isn't Borderlands.

Regardless, it's an impressive achievement on Kanjs' part to have put such a robust and good-looking mod together for Skyrim. PC Skyrim players are able to download the Borderlands Style mod from Nexusmods now.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
