Most RPG titles are known for having hundreds of weapons, armor pieces, and consumables for players to use on their journey. With such a wide range of options, players usually stick to a few tried-and-true options instead of experimenting with hundreds of consumable types.

Skyrim is no exception to this. Most players focus on enchantments and potions rather than micro-manage scrolls or eat over a thousand cheese wheels for health. There is hidden value in some of Skyrim's lesser-known items, however, that every player should be aware of. Here are ten underrated items in Skyrim that players should use more often.

10 Spellbreaker

Shields are a powerful item in Skyrim since they can parry enemy attacks and provide excellent defense. That said, they are severely lacking when it comes to deflecting spells.

Spellbreaker isn't any typical shield. This Daedric Artifact not only blocks physical attacks, but it can also ward off spells. When players block with this shield, Spellbreaker will project a 50-point ward that refreshes its health every second. Should the shield be lowered, the ward will persist for a few seconds.

The ward is strong enough to absorb every dragon breath attack in the game, and it can also absorb most mage attacks. Only crafted shields can compete with Spellbreaker's utility.

9 Salt Pile

Salt Piles are critical for creating certain magic-focused potions and nearly every type of food in Skyrim. For how crucial they are, Salt Piles are surprisingly uncommon—typically found in fish barrels or merchants. Make sure to stock up on Salt Piles if any survival mod is installed. Otherwise, players are going to have a hard time making food for themselves.

8 Elsweyr Fondue

By far the most underrated Magicka buff in Skyrim is Elsweyr Fondue. For the low cost of an Ale, Eidar Cheese Wheel, and Moon Sugar, the player will have 25% increased Magicka regeneration and 100 extra Magicka points for 12 real-time minutes. Most potions can't compete with this buff. Elsweyr Fondue is an incredible early-game item since it helps mages with their Magicka-sustain.

7 Vegetable Soup

The Elsweyr Fondue for stamina characters, Vegetable Soup is a food item that restores one point of health and stamina per second for 12 real-time minutes. While the health regeneration sounds lackluster, the stamina buff is the polar opposite.

Since heavy attacks only require one stamina to initiate, this soup effectively gives players infinite heavy attacks for 12 minutes. For the low cost of one Cabbage, Leek, Potato, and Tomato, there is no reason not to make this item whenever possible.

6 The Black Star

During "The Black Star," players will have to decide whether to obtain Azura's Star or a variant of it named the Black Star. Both are virtually the same except the Black Star can hold both black and white souls instead of just white, meaning the Black Star can hold black souls atop grand and lower-tier soul types.

What makes this item so powerful is it doesn't break when used. Players can carry a grand soul in this item at all times as a backup for charging a weapon. Having an unbreakable soul gem is invaluable for enchanters and any late-game characters that use enchanted weapons.

5 Scrolls

Scrolls in general are severely underused by most characters. These magical pieces of parchment provide a spell effect for free. Summoning any Atronach or casting a Turn Undead spell can turn the tide of battle in an instant. They weigh almost nothing, can grant Master-level spells, and don't cost any Magicka. Everyone should have a few scrolls ready regardless of their build.

4 Ring of the Erudite

Available to Vampire Lords during the "Rings of Blood Magic" quest, the Ring of the Erudite is a criminally underused ring for mage characters. Its description states that it grants players increased Magicka regeneration and 100 extra points of Magicka. While that seems lacking when enchantments exist, that first modifier is much stronger than it implies.

The Magicka regeneration from Ring of the Erudite is a flat 2% of the player's total Magicka pool. In other words, players regenerate 5% of their total Magicka pool per second than the default 3%. This is the only item in Skyrim that increases base Magicka regeneration, and the ring stacks multiplicatively with other regeneration buffs.

3 Ring of Namira

Cannibalism is only possible with the Ring of Namira equipped, a Daedric Artifact that is obtained during the quest aptly named "The Taste of Death." While equipped, players gain 50 points to their stamina pool and can feed on corpses to gain 50 health and 50% health regeneration for five minutes. Should players obtain this early in their playthrough, this ring will outperform most potions since it can be used an infinite amount of times and grants health regeneration.

2 Dawnguard Rune Axe

What the Dawnguard Rune Axe lacks in raw damage it makes up for in scalability. Dealing 11 base damage and ten Sun damage, this weapon is a solid early to mid-game weapon that is easily outclassed later on.

What this doesn't account for is the weapon's scaling Sun damage. Every undead slain by this weapon grants it an extra point of Sun damage until the next sunrise. This stacking buff caps off at 100 kills, meaning it deals 110 Sun damage and 11 base damage. While this seems impossible to maintain due to the sunrise mechanic, simply tempering the weapon at a grindstone will make its kill tally permanent. Obtain 100 kills in a day, upgrade the weapon, then enjoy a one-handed axe that deals over 121 damage a swing.

1 Windshear

Obtained during the "Hail Sithis!" quest for the Dark Brotherhood, Windshear is easily the strongest one-handed weapon in Skyrim thanks to its enchantment. While its damage is rather low at 11 per swing, Windshear has the ability to paralyze targets after a direct hit. In essence, Windshear stun-locks its foes to death. As long as the enemy isn't immune to paralysis, Windshear will trivialize every combat encounter in Skyrim.
