The Elder Scrolls has an interesting relationship with babies and it's all thanks to an unusual contest/promotion Bethesda thought of at the beginning of the year. If one loving couple could birth a child on Skyrim's release date of 11-11-11 and name said child Dovahkiin ("Dragonborn" in dragon tongue), that family would win every release from Bethesda (old and new) for life, along with a few other surprise gifts.
It was more of a joke that earned some fun publicity but of course, someone did it. Say hello to Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer, born as the prophecy foretold on on November 11th 2011.
Parents Megan and Eric Kellermeyer didn't plan this out first. In fact, they found out about it after they conceived and it was Megan's idea. They already have a daughter with a unique name and wanted the same for their son to be. With support from family and friends, and the fact that it's an awesome name, they ended up falling in love with the idea and on November 10th, they hoped their unborn son would hold out one more day. He did just that.
From Bethesda:
“Be it the real world or the game worlds we create, we wish young Dovahkiin the best in all his adventures. And if Alduin ever reaches this realm, we’ll be in touch.”
The downside from such a unique name is that the child will never be able to spell it, but he shouldn't fear ridicule from other youngsters as he grows up. He's named after a destined dragon hunter. That's awesome.
In other baby-related news, last week we shared images of an amazing custom Skyrim gaming PC that a man made after failing to convince his girlfriend to name their child "Dovahkiin" as well. He figured that since he couldn't name his real child that, why not create a mechanical baby in the form of a beasty computer.
We also can't forget about Chaz and Stevi either, the other Bethesda love couple. Chaz proposed to Stevi on stage at QuakeCon last year. This year at QuakeCon, this time bearing a child, the couple watched Skyrim footage which sent Stevi into labor where she gave birth to Atari Lynn - another video game baby name.
So, Bethesda and The Elder Scrolls franchise creates love and happiness?
