So little is known about Skydance’s still-untitled Marvel game that potentially any narrative beat that fans guess at could be true. It is also unknown when this Black Panther and Captain America game will be heard from again, but at that point fans will surely be happy to learn anything else they can about it. In the meantime, there are only a few certainties that have been made. Skydance’s Marvel game having a WW2 setting is a remarkable choice, and boils its options for obvious antagonists down to two villains in particular: Red Skull and Baron von Strucker.

Marvel’s alternate history involves the Nazi occupation, but also peppers in Hydra, its own bigoted villain organization. It only makes sense then that Skydance’s Marvel game will have Captain America as a playable character to combat this threat in an occupied Paris, France. On the other side of the world, however, Black Panther might be playable in Wakanda, which seemingly has its own Hydra occupation. If each world is kept separate in the game, and each country has its own residing antagonist, then Red Skull and Baron von Strucker would be excellent candidates.

Skydance’s Marvel Game Could Feature Red Skull and Baron von Strucker

Red Skull and Baron von Strucker may not be the most exciting villains in Marvel’s historic pantheon, but they reflect the game’s niche time period and would therefore be canonically logical as featured antagonists. Red Skull and Baron von Strucker are tyrannical terrorist leaders.

Indeed, if Hydra’s infinite, faceless foot soldiers compose the snake’s body, then Red Skull and Baron von Strucker are its twin heads. Skydance’s Hydra will likely imitate Uncharted’s own infinite mercenaries and militiamen, who pour into waist-high cover points and whom Nathan Drake unabashedly guns down.

The same will probably occur in Skydance’s Marvel game, where players will have close-quarters combat options as well as long-ranged options against myriad Hydra soldiers. Gabriel Jones seems to carry a standard rifle, for example, while Captain America can hurl his shield and let it bound back to him while dealing with some closer threats.

It will be interesting to see how similar this Marvel title’s gameplay is to Amy Hennig’s Uncharted, but that could be a great template for what the game’s WW2 atmosphere needs. Either way, the game may or may not feature Red Skull and Baron von Strucker, but if Hydra is the game’s main antagonist then it would make sense to have them as final bosses that players encounter.

Skydance’s Marvel Game May Have a Dark Tone to Match Its WW2 Setting

Because it is set during WW2, fans may not get a lighthearted experience like they do in a lot of other Marvel outings. Captain America, Gabriel Jones, Black Panther, and Nanali may try to add some levity through their own dialogue and narrative beats, but with regard to the overall narrative and especially the Hydra occupation, the game looks relatively dark. That could be a boon for Skydance, however, since darker tones in Marvel games are uncommon. Gunplay will be a huge proponent to the game’s tone, since players may be used to pulling their punches as Spider-Man or blasting gelatinous cubes as the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Instead, players will almost assuredly be exchanging gunfire with Hydra soldiers, where Paris streets could quickly become a bloodbath behind abandoned automobiles and other means of cover. Switching between Skydance’s playable Marvel protagonists will be interesting as well, but fans will ultimately have to wait until details are officially shared, probably at a much later date.

Skydance’s Marvel game is in development.
