The art director of Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 is officially working on a new project, the freelance artist announced Sunday morning on Twitter. Masahiro Ito is a name with an impressive legacy that's recently had a resurgence in the video game industry. But after his most recent work as a creature designer for Metal Gear Survive, many questioned what he'd work on next. It seems Ito has found a new project to pursue, but he's not quite ready to reveal what it is.

In his Twitter post, Ito provides an ambiguous update regarding what he's working on. "I'm working on a title as a core member," Ito explains, hinting that he's taken on a more substantial role than simply a creature or monster designer. While "core member" could mean many things, especially given the likely translation gap, it could insinuate Ito might be returning to an art director role for the first time since Silent Hill 3.

Ito does offer a line of caution, however. In his tweet, he also says, "I hope the  title won't be canceled." This perhaps implies that the title is early in development and so carries with it some uncertainty. It could also simply be Ito being cynical, perhaps due to another project he was excited about being canceled in recent memory. Some are even speculating that Ito could be hinting that he's working on another Silent Hill game and is referencing the cancellation of Silent Hills.

While it's fun to speculate, it's difficult to make too many assumptions about Ito's new project. Ito has only returned to video game development recently. After doing the art direction for Silent Hill 2 and 3, Ito's next project was the indie game NightCry in 2016. That's over a decade without a major project. His most recent projects, NightCry and Metal Gear Survive, had him working as a monster and creature designer. They also had him bounce between independent development and working for Konami again. Where Ito might currently be working and what the scale of the project he's working on is a complete mystery.

One other interesting thing to think about is Ito's repeated interest in working on more Silent Hill. His avatar on Twitter remains his monstrous creation, Pyramid Head. And in 2012, Ito said he'd love to work on a new Silent Hill game with Hideo Kojima. In a perfect world, Ito would either be working on a new Silent Hill game with Konami or he'd be working with Hideo Kojima on a new horror game inspired by Silent Hill. Anything possible, though certainly unlikely.

Expect more information on Masahiro Ito's next project as its development continues.
