Silent Hill 4: The Room earned somewhat mixed reviews at the time of its release, especially compared to other games in the Silent Hill franchise. However, it's retroactively been held in much higher esteem, with much praise given to its setting and twists on the established Silent Hill formula. Now, just in time for Halloween, Silent Hill 4: The Room is making a comeback, having just released digitally on GOG.

For those who are unfamiliar with Silent Hill 4, the game originally launched in 2004, and was a major departure from previous games in some key areas. Most notably, Silent Hill 4 had a hub world of sorts, with players mysteriously trapped in their apartment. Players are free to explore their apartment in first-person view, and eventually they will discover a strange hole in the wall. As it turns out, the hole is a portal that leads to the twisted world of Silent Hill.

Outside of the apartment, Silent Hill 4: The Room plays more like a classic Silent Hill game, with players collecting items, solving puzzles, and fighting off supernatural creatures. Players take on the role of Henry Townshend, and learn more about him and the the secret behind his entrapment as they progress through the game. Anyone interested can pick up Silent Hill 4: The Room for $9.99 on GOG, and like all games released on the service, it is DRM-free.

The re-release of Silent Hill 4: The Room is part of GOG's 12th anniversary celebration. The service is also celebrating by discounting over 200 games, some up to 90% off, and by releasing DRM-free versions of Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlord as well as The Talos Principle: Gold Edition alongside Silent Hill 4.

Silent Hill 4 is just the latest popular game from the 2000s to receive a re-release through GOG. Last month, GOG re-released Freedom Fighters, as well as a variety of classic Konami games, including Metal Gear Solid titles. Looking forward, fans can expect GOG to continue re-releasing old-school games as its main strategy, but the service will continue to have new releases as well, with Cyberpunk 2077 being one of the most notable on the horizon.

While fans wait for GOG to add even more content, they can check out Silent Hill 4: The Room and a variety of other classic horror games that are available on the service. And maybe if horror fans are lucky, that will include some other classic Silent Hill games at some point down the line.

Silent Hill 4: The Room is available now for PC, PS2, and Xbox.
