Yacht Club Games continues to support the smash hit platformer Shovel Knight with expansions and free content updates. The PC version of Shovel Knight recently received such an update, making the previously Xbox One-exclusive Battletoads boss fights available for those that own the game on Steam.

However, finding the titular Battletoads is easier said than done. They're actually hidden by a "double secret" in the game, which players can find in the Hall of Champions. For the first part of the secret, players need to go to the wall on the far right of the first floor in the Hall of Champions and break it. Next, collect the items in this room and then continue going all the way to the right. Upon reaching this point, perform a downward attack to find the Battletoads map.

After collecting the Battletoads map, Zitz, Pimple, and Rash will spawn on the world map. Bump into them to initiate a series of three boss battles that reward players with the powerful Toad Gear upon completion. The Toad Gear is rather nifty and worth seeking out for Shovel Knight aficionados, as it gives Shovel Knight a powerful new running attack as well as a speed boost.

While it took a couple of years, it's nice to see the Battletoads content come to the PC version of Shovel Knight. However, owners of the PC version shouldn't see this as the beginning of a trend. Microsoft's push for PC gaming is likely the reason why Battletoads characters are now in the PC version of Shovel Knight, but since Sony doesn't have a similar stake in the platform, fans shouldn't expect to see God of War's Kratos make his way to the game as well.

As for why Microsoft has suddenly decided to allow the Battletoads to debut in the PC version of Shovel Knight, it's hard to say. One possibility is that the company wants to keep the Battletoads IP fresh in gamers' minds in anticipation of a Battletoads reboot that has been rumored for years. However, that's just speculation at this time.

Regardless of any future plans for Battletoads, fans can check them out right now in both the PC and Xbox One versions of Shovel Knight. Plus, they can play the classic games as a part of the Rare Replay collection.

Shovel Knight is available now for Nintendo Switch, 3DS, PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, and Xbox One.
