Shinji Mikami is one of the industry's most revered game directors. Not only did he create the landmark Resident Evil franchise, but he also directed Resident Evil 4, considered to be one of the most influential games of all time. The last game Mikami himself directed was 2014's The Evil Within, but it seems as though the legendary developer is finally ready to reveal his next project for Tango Gameworks and Bethesda.

Last week, Mikami revealed that he would be at E3 2019. At the time, it was unclear why Mikami was coming to E3, but he has now revealed that he had a "Rehearsal Day." This suggests that Mikami is scheduled to be a part of Bethesda's E3 2019 press conference, where he is expected to announce his new game.

Now the question remains, what is Mikami's next game? To date, his Tango Gameworks studio has only produced two projects, those being The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2The Evil Within 2 reportedly did not sell quite as well as the original game, and it also was somewhat divisive for fans. Our own The Evil Within 2 review was largely positive, but others disliked the shift to more open environments and took issue with other aspects of the game as well.

Considering the somewhat mixed critical reception to The Evil Within 2 and its comparably lower sales, it would be somewhat surprising for Mikami to reveal The Evil Within 3. Then again, perhaps the thought is that with Mikami back at the helm, he will be able to take the franchise to new heights with The Evil Within 3.

The Evil Within 3 is certainly a possibility for E3 2019, but Mikami's project could be something else entirely. Perhaps the game Mikami will announce at Bethesda's E3 2019 press conference is a brand new IP of some kind, though what that could be is anyone's guess.

Luckily, fans won't have to wait long to find out why Shinji Mikami is at E3 2019. Bethesda's E3 2019 press conference is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 9 at 5:30pm PT
