Sega reveals that it would ‘love’ to release remastered versions of the original two Shenmue games, and is currently investigating how to make these HD remasters a reality.
Although the Sega Dreamcast has been resigned to the status of a cult classic, rather than reaching the echelons of the best consoles of all time, the home console did have both some fantastic features and stellar games. Chief amongst the best games of its library were Shenmue 1 and 2, providing users with a gaming experience that went into bold new territory. With Shenmue 3 currently in development with the help of Kickstarter backers, many have wondered whether the first two games in the franchise would see some kind of re-release.
As it turns out, Sega has also had the same thoughts. In a recent video over on the official Sega Europe YouTube channel, the publisher answered a fan question over the possibility of Shenmue remastered editions. Community manager Dan Sheridan gave fans of the original games a glimmer of hope, stating that Sega would “love to release these tomorrow.”
Unfortunately, there are some sticking points that may prohibit Sega from getting stuck in to these remastered versions. To begin with, the publisher would need to “ensure that the quality of any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles.” To make things even more complicated, the inclusion of licensed products in the original games could lead to some issues with re-releasing the games. Those interested in seeing the full discussion can do so by watching the YouTube video below.
Although that may sound like the task could be a difficult one, there is certainly reason for Shenmue fans to be positive. From the sounds of it, Sega is actively looking in to bringing Shenmue back on to the market in the form of these HD remasters. Sheridan stated that Sega would “love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.”
There have been plenty of highly successful reboots and remasters over recent years, and Sega would be far from the only company to see success with an HD upgrade to an existing game. Rockstar Games’ remaster of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Naughty Dog’s HD update to The Last of Us are considered among the best remastered editions and reboots of all time, and there is no reason why Shenmue could not become another name on that list.
Fans of the franchise, meanwhile, are still awaiting further details surrounding the in-development Shenmue 3. The game has taken the crown of the most successful video game Kickstarter ever, and anticipation is through the roof for the finished product. One thing’s for sure: should Sega’s HD remaster of the first two Shenmue games provide screenshots as stunning as these, then the publisher will no doubt be on to a winner.
