In Shenmue 3, players continue Ryo Hazuki's quest to find his father's killer. Picking up where the prequel left off over a decade ago, the newest entry takes the search for Lan Di to China in the 1980s. While moving through the game's different settings, Ryo can explore towns, interact with people, and undertake a variety of tasks to advance the plot. However, there are also side activities which are optional, reward money, and can immerse the player in the world.

Among sparring, forklift delivery, and other activities comes a more calming pastime: fishing. Locations to fish at a lake or other body of water are designated by small wooden posts marked with a picture of a fish. In fact, these fishing spots are found immediately after starting the game, even though the player won't unlock the activity for quite some time. However, this is part of the Shenmue series' design, an influence which continues even today.

Unlocking Fishing

To unlock fishing, players need to progress the main story until Ryo has to meet Shenhua at Ternary Spring. Instead of heading there immediately, follow the signs to take a detour to the big lake near Man Yuan Temple. Located here is the fishing shop, Huang's Tackle where Ryo can rent a fishing rod for a day as well as participate in a fishing competition with its own rewards. Note that in Shenmue 3, a rental lasts for an in-game day of time or until the end of a contest, where it is returned immediately.

How to Fish

Afterwards, to fish, the player simply needs to head back to an aforementioned fishing spot. Once there, press X to cast and start reeling in with the right stick until a fish bites. At this point, continue reeling in faster with the right stick while using the left stick to move the rod when flashing blue lights appear on either side. Finally, keep repeating the process until Ryo catches the fish.

In the end, fishing is a more calming alternative to the other tasks that Ryo can and will undertake in-game. Furthermore, the player can make some decent money from catching bigger fish and combined with other ways to make money this will be an activity that they come back to when they need funds to move the story forward.
