Marvel Studios' upcoming films and television shows will introduce several newcomers to the MCU, but that doesn't mean a few fan favorites who've been missing for a while have been forgotten. Tim Roth will reprise his role as the Abomination in Tatiana Maslany's She-Hulk series for Disney Plus, and the actor recently opened up about his MCU return.

Before Roth's upcoming return in She-Hulk, fans reunited with the Abomination for the first time since 2008's The Incredible Hulk in 2021's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In that film, Abomination was a (seemingly) willing participant in an underground fight club, losing a battle to Benedict Wong's Wong.

While the appearance by the Abomination in Shang-Chi was brief and provided no details on what the character had been up to since fans last saw him, it was welcomed surprise to the already anticipated film. In fact, the return of Abomination came as a shock to Roth as well, who discussed how his journey back to the MCU came about with Uproxx. "Well, honestly, it totally surprised me. I went in to chat with Kevin Feige and he said, 'I’ve got an idea. Come in.' Really? Really? Because the original thing that I did, when I did that first Incredible Hulk movie, was I just did it for my kids," Roth said.

Roth also reflected on the fact that when The Incredible Hulk was being shot, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hadn't even begun yet, as Iron Man had yet to be released at the time. Roth noted that in the time since, Marvel Studios has nailed down how to produce a franchise consisting of multiple interconnected films. As for his forthcoming return in She-Hulk, Roth had nothing but good things to say about the experience and co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Maslany. "I got to work with Mark Ruffalo. Awesome. Who I love. And I don’t know if I’m allowed to say. Oh, I can say that. But this extraordinary woman, Tatiana. Incredible, that woman. So that was a blast. It was insane," he gushed.

When it was first announced that Roth and Ruffalo would return for She-Hulk, few details were provided as to what kind of role they would play in the story. While it may seem obvious that Abomination would be a foe to Maslany's She-Hulk, the fearsome character seemed comparatively friendly when he appeared in Shang-Chi, at least enough to have formed some kind of bond with Wong.

Besides, it appears She-Hulk will have some enemies of her own when she makes her MCU debut. Jameela Jamil is set to play Titania, a rival to She-Hulk from the comics.

She-Hulk is expected to premiere on Disney Plus in 2022.
