Almost immediately after the first She-Hulk trailers hit the web, there were more than a few people who were concerned about the CGI around Tatiana Maslany's character. While there are still some She-Hulk fans concerned over her appearance on the Disney Plus show, several people connected with the series are hitting back at the sheer amount of criticism that's come from the trailers.

The near-constant criticism of the CGI effects in the first She-Hulk trailer was loud enough that Marvel Studios went back to the drawing board to upgrade the She-Hulk CGI look. However, there are still plenty of people who still think she looks "weird" and doesn't really fit in with the rest of the CGI effects that Marvel Studios has drawn praise for in the past. Now it appears that the show's star and some of its higher-ups are trying to explain that things are just a bit more difficult when it comes to putting She-Hulk together.

Maslany, Writer Jessica Gao, and director Kat Coiro appeared at a Television Critics Association press panel and Coiro especially pulled no punches in hitting back at the criticism. "I think that has to do with our culture’s belief in its ownership of women’s bodies,” she explained. She went on to add that she thinks the people who have been complaining are just feeling a bit more empowered because they are tearing apart a woman's body. Coiro also said there had been quite a bit of talk about She-Hulk's body type and explained they had made the conscious decision to base the body on Olympic athletes rather than bodybuilders. That is certainly a difference in the build of Maslany's character compared to Mark Ruffalo's Hulk.

For her part, Gao said that there have been some extreme demands from the effects artists at least in part because of the criticism of the effects. Gao added that since She-Hulk is CG there are some serious demands and she has regret that some of the artists are feeling such pressure. Maslany chimed in on Gao's point, saying that she felt as though the artists have had to work quite quickly on the star-studded Disney Plus show. She added that the way the VFX artists are having to churn stuff out is a pace that they probably shouldn't have to face and for that she's quite grateful for the work that has been done.

Whether those comments and the eventual release of the show might quiet the criticism is something to watch moving forward. Still, despite the criticism, general responses to the She-Hulk previews have been positive.

She-Hulk officially lands on Disney Plus on August 18, 2022.
