The Shazam Family is a group consisting of the mighty mortals led by Billy Batson. The members consist of the same foster family of brothers and sisters, each receiving an aspect of Shazam’s power. The powers of Shazam are cooperation from Billy Batson and his foster siblings, as when transformed, the power is divided equally from one between six of the members.
The siblings of the Vasquez foster family all prove that they are pure of heart for how they care for each other and the people that they can help with their powers. Being a superhero is no easy task, especially when homework is due the next day. However, the Shazam Family make it work, and it will be fun to see how they balance the superhero life with their responsibilities in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
6 Pedro Peña
All members of the Shazam family are equally important. They are, after all, brothers and sisters, that always seek to make sure everyone is okay. However, as for time spent with the character, it is rather limited. Pedro Peña wears the Shazam costume in green color and has an adoration for all things candy and snacks.
The character, when given the powers of Shazam, focuses more so on the physical prowess of Shazam and the power of flight, rather than on the other attributes the Wizard bestowed. His brawn helps him, but his quiet and reserved personality makes him far from the strongest, as he could not be the leader of the group.
5 Eugene Choi
When there is a question that needs answering, or a situation to be resolved, Eugene Choi is the best choice. He’s incredibly smart, and confident, asking questions to strangers in strange lands as to how to get back home if necessary. Eugene has a love for all things technology and gaming. Eugene focuses his Shazam powers more so on the lightning that can emit from his fingers.
Eugene sports a grey costume, with frizzed-up hair as if he has been electrocuted. The character is quirky, and fun to see on the page. It’s more often than not that the character will talk or zap his way out of situations, rather than going in fists blazing.
4 Darla Dudley
As the youngest member of the Shazam family, Darla Dudley has a lot of potential for a superhero career. She loves all of her foster siblings, and foster parents, and is beautifully optimistic about everything. Her powers are equal to the others, but she has a great pendant for the super speed aspects of Shazam.
Darla wears a purple costume, and the only downside the character has is that she talks too much. This is to be expected, and even she states it as a fact too bad guys that she is detaining. This is because she is only young, but still getting great grades on her homework, whilst catching bad guys with her speed.
3 Freddy Freeman
In the New 52/DC Rebirth timeline, Freddy Freeman is introduced as the good-natured prankster in the foster home. He is prone to mischief and pickpocketing and does not allow his disability to get in the way of his kind nature and bravery. However, when embued with the power of Shazam, Freddy becomes Captain Marvel Jr. and presents himself with long blonde hair and a blue costume.
Here, Captain Marvel Jr. exhibits his powers proudly. He wanted to be referred to as “King Shazam” when he first became a hero, a notable nod to Elvis Presley, who took inspiration from Captain Marvel Jr. in his eccentric capes and outfits. What makes Freddy one of the best members of the Shazam Family is his best friend relationship with Billy Batson, and how the character has gone through his trials to be worthy of Shazam alone.
2 Mary Bromfield
As the eldest of the foster siblings of the Vasquez family, Mary Bromfield originated as a foster kid after running away from her abusive home. Mary seems to have the best relationship as a superhero with Shazam, and the two are seen having fun and beating up bad guys together. Lady Shazam sports a costume nearly identical to Shazam with the red color scheme, but instead, wears a skirt.
Lady Shazam is presented as somewhat of an equal to Shazam, and as the eldest, has a good understanding of her foster siblings, and their respect. She wants to be the team leader of the Shazam Family, but considering Billy Batson was the one the Wizard chose, she has to settle for second best.
1 Billy Batson
Chosen by the Wizard to be The Champion and defender of the Rock of Eternity, Billy Batson proved he was pure of heart and ready to take on the world as a superhero. Embued with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury, Billy Batson can become the hero and unlock his power potential with just one word: “SHAZAM”.
Billy Batson is the leader of the Shazam Family, and for good reason. He was chosen specifically by the Wizard to be his Champion. Billy has faced many hardships but has never prioritized himself. He has battled Black Adam and found friendship with the likes of the Justice League.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 21, 2022.
