Many fans were surprised when Rise of the Tomb Raider was announced as a timed-exclusive for Xbox 360 and Xbox One, keeping PS4 gamers out of the loop for nearly a year. There was some worry that the next game in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, would follow suit, but as it turns out, there will be no timed exclusivity for the game on any platform.
This was confirmed by Square Enix earlier today, when it confirmed that Shadow of the Tomb Raider will launch across all platforms simultaneously on September 14. However, even though Shadow of the Tomb Raider isn't going to be a timed-exclusive for Xbox One, the Xbox family may see some added benefits that won't be available for the PlayStation 4 version of the game.
This is just speculation at this time, but it's worth pointing out that Square Enix has mentioned the Xbox One X as a platform for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but not the PS4 Pro. While it's possible that this is just an oversight on Square Enix's part, it could be an indication that Shadow of the Tomb Raider will have special enhancements on the Xbox One X that won't be available elsewhere.
Even then, we are just guessing that Shadow of the Tomb Raider will have Xbox One X enhancements. Square Enix didn't specifically say that it did, only that the game is also being developed for the Xbox One X as well as the regular Xbox One. More details on that front should come to light next month, as Square Enix plans on properly pulling the curtain back on the game on April 27, but until then, all fans can do is watch the teaser trailer and speculate.
The official unveiling on April 27 should also bring with it more details about the game in general. So far, there is very little we know about Shadow of the Tomb Raider, except that it is meant to complete Lara Croft's origin story and that it will be taking a new approach to the series. Here's hoping more details come April 27 so fans aren't left in the dark for too long.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be available on September 14 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
