A new trailer for the upcoming remake of Shadow of the Colossus was featured at this morning’s Sony press conference during Tokyo Game Show 2017. Starting at midnight on the west coast, the PlayStation event highlighted several of the console’s upcoming exclusives. Shadow of the Colossus may even have been the most anticipated project shown, especially considering the mystery surrounding what’s commonly considered one of the best games ever made.

The trailer, which falls short of two minutes, covers a broad swathe of Shadow of the Colossus content. Several of the updated Colossi are revealed, the intro bridge is briefly shown, as is the Shrine of Worship where Wander’s love sleeps without waking. While it has been widely publicized Shadow of the Colossus is not just an HD remaster, but a full remake, it’s now extremely clear that there is a driven dedication to authenticity.

Visually, the Shadow of the Colossus remake is remarkably accurate to the original. It’s so accurate that confusion over whether the game is a full remake or a remaster is likely to persist. The Colossi may as well have stepped directly from the PlayStation 2 onto the PlayStation 4. The excellent lighting and shadowing are both certainly modern and new, of course, and the combination of both classic design and modern technology is undeniably beautiful.

With the visuals being so similar to the classic Shadow of the Colossus, questions grow regarding just how Sony will make changes to the game in the remake. Sony has said previously that what’s being altered includes updated controller configurations, along with the updated art assets and modern tech.

It’s clear that the Shadow of the Colossus remake is coming along exquisitely. It’s going to be exciting to see what kind of reception the game will have in 2018 compared to its initial launch in 2005.

Shadow of the Colossus releases in 2018 exclusively on the PlayStation 4.
